Couldn't Save Highlighted Changes Error (Word on the web)

I have been working for about five hours editing a manuscript in Microsoft Word 365 (web based) This is a job that would've been completed a good three hours ago were it not for the continuous error message: "Couldn't save highlighted changes. To avoid losing them, open this document in a new tab and paste these changes. If you refresh this tab, you will lose these changes."

This error occurs every time I make a change to the document. I have a deadline and would very much like to NOT spend every fifteen minutes opening a new document just to edit something. This defeats the purpose of Microsoft Word, a software program meant to make things easier.

What can be done to solve this annoying issue?

I have gone through the myriad other responses people have had about the exact same issue, and have tried:

  1. Clearing the cache
  2. Rebooting
  3. Saving as a new document
  4. Downloading and uploading the document again
  5. Checking my internet speed

The document is being saved to OneDrive.

I would be very grateful for any assistance here. As you can tell, it is an extremely frustrating problem that appears to have been going on for some time and has not been corrected.

I just experienced something very similar when working on a very small document in Chrome that affected a handful of lines and an associated comment.

Last week I had one of our users report they experienced something that may have been similar, but they lost a day's worth of work! I am not sure whether it is possible to ignore the error message (and pink highlight) and keep typing for many hours to end up losing all the work when the laptop's battery subsequently died and crashed the session. That is not a happy place to be if Word for the web can allow this.

    Hi Lara Allen

Thank you so much for reaching out to the Q&A Forum. I’m really sorry for the trouble you’ve been experiencing, and I completely understand how frustrating this must feel, especially when you’ve already spent hours on your manuscript. I’ll do my best to help you get this sorted out.

From what you shared, it sounds like you’ve already tried clearing the cache, rebooting, saving as a new document, re-uploading, and checking your internet speed, but the issue is still happening, am I right?

Could you let me know a few more details?

    • Have you tried opening the document in InPrivate/Incognito mode?
    • How about switching to a different browser (for example, Microsoft Edge)?
    • Is this document being edited by multiple people? If so, could you try setting it to view-only for others and see if that changes anything?
    • What kind of license do you have, and what type of account are you using (personal, work, or school)?

If the problem continues, here are some suggestions that you might try:

    • Edit offline in the desktop Word app, then re-upload the file.
    • Download the document, delete the old version from OneDrive, and upload the updated file as a new document. This often helps if the original file is stuck in a sync loop or has become corrupted.
    • Or copy everything into a new document and see if the issue happens there too.

One last question: does this happen with just this document, or have you noticed it with other documents as well?

I’m here to help, so please let me know what you find and we’ll take it from there.
