Is the free version of Office Online coming to an end?

I use the free version of Office Online. Is it coming to an end with the changes later this year, meaning everyone has to buy the paid-for version of M365?

Honestly it sucks. The free version is far more complicated than it needs to be loading a copy of 2007 power point is such a lack of head ache
no horrible software or server issues
no AI suggestions that overwrite your work with generic unprofessional robotic paragraphs
no image sync issues
Good riddance. Microsoft was foolish to make the software so complicated AND make it server based. Less people use it (younger and non-commercial entities) and so theyre just adding features to run on servers for no reason
go Own your software or forever deal with this horrible service

Thanks for bringing this up. Could you let me know where you heard or read that the free version of Office Online might be ending? This will help me verify the source and give you the most accurate information.

As far as I know, the free web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, previously called “Office Online,” are not going away. You can still access them for free through Office.com with any Microsoft account.

In short, you will not be forced to pay later this year or lose access to the free web versions. Microsoft has no plans to retire them.

You might be thinking of Office 2016 and Office 2019, which are reaching the end of support. You can read more about that here:

I read this Q&A in 2026 Aug 17th, I am confusing too and thinking MS's free web-version is stopped too.

After Window 11 is up, most of the old version files of my Window Office, Word and Excel are not supported by MS. As a retired and age 75 user, I feel hard to follow up and learn all those daily new I/T changes without A SMART BRAIN and real service support. I think I am use the web-version, which was mentioned IT IS FREE. My M.S. acct storage 110GB, system displayed that now remain 23GB free. I am not a big user of Microsoft program.

I found lots of basic common functions in Word & Excel I am familiar with were either gone or changed. I became using much less MS Word & Excel. To save money I haven't buy any MS 365 new version, instead I paid MS basic features monthly then annually $19.95. Until a friend helped me to buy online version of Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024. He uses LTSC for 2-3 years feels OK enough without a Microsoft account set-up.

My MS basic version annual $20 is due in every Sept. I stopped recurring MS autopay 2026 annual fee. Thinking that my web-version will be continued for my MS acct, so I can use my Outlook for old email address which is under "hotmail.com" and do a few new Excel spreadsheet. I received MS email telling me the following:"Your Microsoft 365 Basic subscription has been canceled and will end on September 17, 2026. If you've exceeded your Microsoft storage quota, you won't be able to send or receive email in Outlook.com and you won’t be able to upload, edit, or sync new files (such as Camera Roll) to your OneDrive.

If you change your mind, you can turn on recurring billing or manage your subscription at any time by signing in to your Microsoft account to continue having reliable backup for your documents, ransomware recovery, easy document sharing, cloud storage, and more with OneDrive."

AM I EXPECTING MS WILL NOTIFY ME IF STORAGE REACHED AND DO I NEED TO BUY STORAGE AGAIN?

I JUST WANT TO KEEP MY OLD MS FILES UNTIL I CAN GO THROUGH THE APP & TEMPORARY FILES STORAGE.

HOW THE WEB FREE VERSION WORKS FOR ME, , CAN'T IT STORE IN MS ACCOUNT FOR FREE UP TO 110GB WHEN WEB VERSION SERVICE IS FREE?

Where did you get that from? As far as I know, the free (but limited) online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook will remain available.
