Is this scam? Complete a purchase by May 11, 2025 to keep your account active (SOLVED)

Hi Tim,

This isn't about having a Windows administrator account, it's about Microsoft thinking you're an admin of an organization or business account with a subscription in Microsoft business services.

I wanted to know why Microsoft thought I had such an account, but MS Learn support said they weren't allowed to access those details and I'd have to go through Support for Business Services products. However, I couldn't log in to Support for Business Services products because I don't have a Business Services subscription!

Catch-22. It's Kafkaesque...

They say that if you ignore the email it won't affect your personal account & purchases, but that doesn't answer the question ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you so much for your latest reply; I think we finally have the answer, in MS Learn's final paragraph . . .

'Please note that this emaildoes not affect your data or personal account*. If no purchase is made by the deadline, your Entra ID tenant connecting to your business subscription (this has been inactive for a long time) will be disabled - however, it has no effect on your current personal Microsoft account and subscription you are having.'*

I suspect that this is related to the preparation for the withdrawal of support for Windows 10, (on October 14th, this year) and agree with you, that this should not have gone out to many of their customers. I seem to remember that I had to set myself up as an administrator to enable the defragmentation application; this may be why I'm on their mailing list.

OK, I got a clearer explanation from a moderator at Microsoft Learn:

Microsoft Entra ID (former Azure Active Directory or AAD) is Microsoft's cloud-based identity and access management service. It allows you to manage identities and access within your organization. The Entra ID tenant helps you create and manage amount of user accounts and application access to Azure services, ensuring that everyone in your organization has the appropriate access they need.

You might likely have a Microsoft Entra ID tenant maybe in the past you might sign up for a Microsoft account that relevant to AAD, such as work or school account

Of course, I don't have an organization, work, or school account, and have never had one, nor have I knowingly signed up to a business service, so it's still a mystery why I received the email. It's only natural to worry that one's account may have been compromised...

The Microsoft support people at learn.microsoft.com told me it means I have a role of a global administrator and have to purchase something to stop this Entra tenant ID expiring. I have told them I'm not an administrator of anything, and am waiting for them to tell me what this tenant ID is for and why Microsoft thinks I have one.

I think it is a major cock-up by Microsoft.
