why would my OneDrive suddenly be processing over 40,000 changes?

I just noticed that my Win 11 PC is doing the same thing. It updated a couple days ago (3-14-2025) and this is the first time that I have been on it and it just says processing 112,000 changes and slowly counting down. I found some random things that are apparently syncing, but they aren't files that I have accessed in quite some time and there is no indication as to what they are actually doing. In general, it gives no indication what it's doing or why. Microsoft seems to just be screwing everything up. Worse than normal.

Same issue for me on two different Windows 11 machines just started this month (March 2025) after installing a Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2...I have left one machine on for a day to complete the processing changes and now doing on my other...this better not result in losing data or having it altered in some massive way.

Same issue happened to me today, 28.02.2025. I noticed the problem when i tried to save a word file as pdf file to the same OneDrive folder where i opened it. Word gave "path does not exist" error when i pressed save button. Interestingly, i can reach folder with windows explorer and see all of the documents saved there and open any file. But when i try to save them to there again, word gave "path not found" error. I restarted my computer and tried again. Folder was reachable, files were working but i could not save there. I also noticed that Word was opening unusually slow when i opened word documents from that folder.

Therefore, i checked OneDrive app. My OneDrive (version 25.015.0126.0002) was stuck at processing around 10.000 changes. It was not doing anything. We did change only 5 or 10 documents recently.

So, I reset OneDrive. It gave me "We're resetting. Go ahead and keep working on your files...." message and started to process more than 50.000 changes. But it was not stuck this time. it nearly took half an hour to finish.

When One Drive finished processing changes, it gave me another error message as " we cannot merge changes in two folders, one folder is renamed as Design Docs-DESKTOP97RAF". Hundreds of files were lost in this new folder created by OneDrive. Original Design Docs folder is changed to internet shortcut???. I can no longer reach my shared folder from my computer. My shared folder can only be accessed from Web. I deleted this web shortcut. Afterwards, i tried to add shortcut from OneDrive web to same location. It only adds internet shortcut. I cannot work from my computer anymore.

What are you doing guys at there?

Same issue with OneDrive version: Build 25.010.0119.0002

It is processing for the 2nd time today (this evening), after this mornings run completed ~2 hours ago, it took all day. As such, while it's running, it prevents other changes being upload to the cloud or when is does, there are conflicts that are produced and OneDrive end-ups with several file versions with the machine name appended at the end of file name.

Given these issues, OneDrive is NOT usable on the desktop/laptop. Ugh, frustrating to say the least.....terrible product and/or support from MS....

Same thing happened to me around February 19th 2025, on Windows 11 and for OneDrive Version 25.005.0112.0003. Maybe after the Windows 24H2 February Tuesday update... Processing 400000 changes. Very frustrating. I don't know why this suddenly happened.
