OneDrive shared folders showing up as URL links and not actual folders

Hi,

When will this problem be fixed? It has been unresolved for nearly two months now.

Issue

Some OneDrive shared folders shortcuts located in your My Files folder may show up as .url internet shortcuts instead of actual folders.

If I try to open the folder shortcut, it opens as a webpage instead of a folder.

Best Regards ,

Blanchi Dabre

Response I received from OneDrive support

Thank you for contacting OneDrive support. Hope you are doing well!

Upon reading your response, it seems files in shared folders added as shortcut are visible as internet shortcut in File Explorer. You can see and access them online. Please do correct us in case we are wrong.

If that is the case, then we regret to inform you that the problem you are experiencing is part of an ongoing issue that our technical team is currently working on. We understand the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience as we strive to resolve this matter.

Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have a specific date for when the fix will be released. Our team is working diligently to address this issue.

In the meantime, we have identified a workaround that may help you continue your work without significant disruption. You can access the folder online, which should allow you to bypass the issue until a permanent fix is implemented.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

Your feedback is invaluable for us to maintain high service standards.

    We regret the inconvenience caused!

    Thank you,

    Parmod. S

    OneDrive Team.

Issue is still unresolved as of 5/2/2025.

    Feedback:

Having to use the web interface is a slower process. Also for some files there is no option to "open in app" and so it's necessary to download them temporarily.

Here at work we use communal folders related to projects, etc. so what I used to do was keep my own files set to "keep local copy" that way I could search specific folders on my hard drive for my own relatable information, but now since I appear to only be able to "search everything" via the web interface. The search results are a disaster of everyone's info.

    Regards,

    John

I’ve tried this and it doesn’t work. Does anyone even know what is the trigger for this? Do I need to download all my files., elete my account, create a new account and start over? At least if I knew that would work, I would do it. But no one knows.

Why does it work for some people and not others? Is this tied to my account, the account I’m sharing from, or what?

I feel like Microsoft really doesn’t care about fixing this issue after 2 years, or doesn’t have anyone in the company smart enough to figure this out. is anyone from Microsoft even working on this?

i have tried this, and even created a fresh new folder to share between the accounts. Doesn't fix the issue. It always comes over as a Internet Shortcut.

Does anyone from Microsoft know when Microsoft is planning to address this issue?
