Excel Error "Excel ran out of resources while attempting to calculate" upon calculation interruption

We encountered the same issue - our sheets are using a lot of LAMBDA() functions, critically so. My PC is Windows 11, Intel i7 14th-Gen CPU, turbo boost disabled, but saw on 13th-Gen CPUs too.

We rolled back to build 16.0.18324.20194. We have instructed our IT administator to freeze automatic Office 365 updates pending updates on the issue. FYI we contacted MS support line, they asked us to do forensic logging etc... we asked them to refer to this thread.

Hi Aaron, please do keep me posted as to the progress.

To assist anyone else in this situation: The above error did seem to reslove itself after a full network reboot.

• However, it does seem that the lambda functions (Since the January 31, 2025 update) were the cause of this resource shortage in the initial workbook. Note, these same functions were in use without issue for three years before January 31, 2025.

I went through my original spreadsheet and removed all lambda functions and replaced with more traditional computation options. Fortunately, the lambdas were more for elegance rather than need.

After removing them all - so far so good. (but it is early). I hope this doesn't appear agian and that this assists you.

Another discovery, I just learned there was another update released today February 11 2025. The timing of these last two updates and this error appearing twice immediately following each is suspect.

Hi Aaron, thank you for posting this. I am in the same boat. I have a complex spreadsheet that has worked for years. It contains power query tables and most formulas use dynamic ranges. We are running it on a windows virtual server with lots of CPU and memory capacity. Using Office 365 E by the way.

It worked perfectly until the January 31st 2025 office update; I'm not sure of the version number of this update. I have never seen this error before. I had daily backups of this same workbook going back months and they are also demonstrating this same error. Which suggests it is not the workbook but an Excel bug or limitation change related to the update.

On Tuesday of last week, I pushed through an update on our operating system and the workbook appeared to work for a few days but once again I'm getting this error.

At this point, I am going to get our IT guys to roll back our excel version to pre January 31. Any permanent solution would be welcomed.
