I don't want to use the copilot features that have automatically been added to my Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.) - and I feel that this should be something that we are able to do, without having to purchase a subscription to copilot and then disable it.
How can I disable these features, to stop the shadow offer to use copilot on every new line I start on a word document and remove the icon from the tool bar?
This should be something that is an optional add on, rather than a mandated installation.

When I click preferences, I do not have copilot to enable or disable. When I go into the Community preferences section and uncheck the boxes i still see copilot in my word app. Help!

They're just using Co-Pilot to reply -- it's the same people who don't actually have their own thoughts in writing who are writing the software and replying in the forums.
There's no doubt that there are some participants who appear to be relying on AI to stamp out replies but they are not the ones who write the software. They are paid 3rd party agents. Neither do those who do write the software spend any time monitoring these peer-to-peer Community fora which is hosted by Microsoft but not maned by Microsoft employees.

First, please understand that you are not communicating with Microsoft here. These are peer-to-peer support fora hosted by Microsoft but not monitored by Microsoft employees. Some of the responders are paid agents [MSFT] but many are experienced, knowledgeable users who volunteer their time to assist others.
As recommended throughout the thread, use Help> Feedback in the program menu to submit your comments to the development group.
You also can visit the Feedback Portal for Word & cast as many votes as it will allow for each posting on the topic.
I completely agree with your sentiment, but if it eases your mind at all there are no indications in a document of Copilot having been used. Just as a suggestion, though, have you considered using PDFs rather than editable Word documents?
