How to disable or remove Copilot in Office 365 Personal

Since the latest Office 365 Personal update Version 2410 (Build 18129.20116) Copilot Draft has been enabled in Word, which I don't want.

I have not checked in other Office 365 programs to see if Copilot is enabled.

How do I disable or better, remove Copilot for Office 365 Personal?

Noting that Office 365 Personal does not have access to the Microsoft Edge admin centre from a personal email address.

Why doesn't Microsoft allow the User to decide whether to opt in to enable Copilot, then automatically enabling Copilot, and making it difficult for the User to disable or remove it!

A short update to include the following from a chat session (after moving through 3 operators) which is interesting to say the least. My question was asking which of the email (with the $159 renewal figure) and the details in my account (with the $109 renewal figure) was correct.

once your subscription is due, you will be charged $159 for the updated subscription with many new features. However, we understand you prefer the classic version, and that is possible. I have spoken to many customers with the same concern. You can contact us before your subscription is due, and we will process the renewal for the classic version at $109. The email you received is correct; it serves as a notification for Microsoft 365 subscribers, but you can remain on the classic version.

    What did you land on? Due to AI permeating systems uninvited, I've dropped Facebook, I'm using Brave instead of Chrome, Yahoo instead of Google, and hunting for an Office alternative if Microsoft can't come to the party with full disabling of AI in their apps.

    I'm following up to describe how I was successful in getting Copilot removed from my Office applications.

    (I'm running Windows 10, based in Australia, and had a Microsoft 365 Family license expiring in early December).

    The answer is "classic". Microsoft 365 Family Classic or Microsoft 365 Personal Classic (subscription) or Office Home 2024 (one-time purchase) do not contain the 'connected experiences', and do not contain Copilot.

    However, you can't get Family/Personal Classic without direct support from Microsoft customer support.

    I followed others' instructions to log into my Microsoft Account, find Microsoft 365 in my subscriptions, click 'manage', then 'cancel' in the hopes of seeing the fabled "Switch to a subscription that’s better for you" option in order to select Classic. But when I hit 'cancel' it tells me:

    "We can’t cancel your subscription. You have already paid for your Microsoft 365 Family subscription. It will expire automatically on (DATE)." (the brick wall)

    So I searched Microsoft 365 plans, which took me to a microsoft.com page. I clicked on "Questions? Talk to an expert" in the bottom right corner to start a chat. I opened with "Microsoft have recently embedded Copilot into Office 365. I will not be renewing my 365 plan because of this. I understand however we can sign up for Microsoft 365 Classic, which does not have Copilot in it. Can you please give me more information?"

    I believe the staff have been coached to offer Classic plans when met with "I will not renew my subscription". The very helpful support/salesperson (no, I'm not being sarcastic - he actually was incredibly helpful!) walked me through the steps I described above until I hit the brick wall.

    But he then directly assisted by cancelling my current subscription, and signing me up for a 'Classic' plan. It did mean I had to forfeit the balance of my existing subscription (which in my case was only 10 days), but I now have Classic. No connected experiences. And no Copilot.

    After signing out of my Office applications, doing updates and a couple of restarts, and logging back in - I'm now Copilot-free.

    I agree. This is completely ridiculous and the customer should NOT be the one wasting our time to disable a feature we DO NOT WANT AND HAVE NOT ENABLED! My suibscription is coming due in a month and I'm seriously considering cancelling it. I'm tired of this ongoing push for unrequested features Microsoft seems to feel they can enable at will.

    Totally Agreement from me

    I removed automatic subscription renewal and won't be renewing my office subscription

    I have moved my email to thunderbird, I have installed libre office products

    I have found that there is not a lot of difference in fact libre Office Draw is much better than Visio

    I am in process of migrating to Linux Fedora and when done will be getting rid of Microsoft full stop.

    Basically AI is about collection of our information which can then be on sold for profit (Don't believe their ****)

    Without this AI will not work.
