Some comments not appearing in contextual view, but appear in list view.

Greetings,

Since the last update (currently running MS Word Version 2408 (Build 17928.20156), some of the comments that I make in Word documents do not appear in contextual view, even though they appear in list view. I am not able to click on them in the text and have the comment appear in contextual view. After I make some comments, they disappear and are only available in list view. I am working on an important paper for the top medical journal in the world, and it is debilitating as an editor to not be able to make comments. This document is shared with 20 people. It has also happened in another document that I am working on for another client (in this document, it happened before the document was shared).

I called support. They cannot help and claim that it is not a Microsoft issue. I have copied and pasted the text with the broken comments into a new document and the problem still occurs. Saved the document to my PC (instead of OneDrive) and the problem still occurs. I have accessed the document on another computer and the problem still occurs.

I am beyond frustrated. My colleagues, global leaders in their fields, are mainly older and are technologically challenged. They will not understand if I tell them to look at the comments in list view instead of contextual view. Essential comments will be missed. I just need it to work properly. I am beyond frustrated.

Any advice is most appreciated!

Thanks

I appreciate the workaround but in my situation we are working across several groups for the review, not just my team. This document iterates between federal and state agencies and I cant train folks that are not on my staff. I can work internally to try and make sure we check on our end, but I would second all the notes here that say its a very odd choice to make on this subject.

I will reach out to MS but there is a reason we all end up here. My last several interactions there were less than helpful.

    Hello all,

I withdraw my previous suggestion about using "Simple Markup". While using "Simple Markup" allowed me to view a couple of the comments that were otherwise invisible to me in the Contextual view, I have now found at least one comment that I cannot see using the "Simple Markup" approach.

Accordingly, my current personal understanding is that the only work-arounds are to see comments in the List view or in the Reviewing Pane, both of which are painful to use.

    Good luck to you all!

    Bruce

    Dear All,

Based on Stefan's comments, the issue has been being investigated by the related team. It may take some time to the final fix.

I welcome the community members to post the information if there are some updates of the issue.

Meanwhile, if the issue is urgent in your environment and you have a Microsoft 365 business subscription, I also suggest you open a support ticket to the related team as soon as possible for the latest updates. Opening a ticket needs the administrator right. If you aren't the tenant administrator, I suggest you contact the administrator to do that.

@Jennifer, thanks for your effort to share the information and suggestions here. We apologize that the issue is a feature issue affecting multiple tenants and we may have limited resources on fixing it. I hope that we can get the latest information about the fix soon.

    Your understanding is highly appreciated.

    Sincerely

    Cliff | Microsoft Community Moderator

It was a nightmare for me last night on an NIH grant that was due today. I did not have luck pasting into a new doc. Same issues. Also, it did not matter if I was highlighting text with track changes or without. I have not been able to discern a pattern thus far.

Wish I could be more help. This issue has caused me so much lost time. It took me 30 minutes to post an important comment yesterday, which is the absolute last thing I need with a tight deadline. Here is how I finally solved it: I wanted to highlight “SPECIFIC AIMS” to make the comment, but the comment kept disappearing. I was eventually able to make the comment stay by only highlighting the “S” at the end of AIMS to insert the comment.

Wish I could be of more help.

ETA, moving comments from others might work, but it might be challenging to retain their identifying information.

Thanks, Cliff. I am the administrator of my org and I have already opened a support ticket. It was fruitless and cost me hours. The customer service rep told me that there was nothing she could do and that the issue was likely isolated to me. She gave me another customer support number to call, but I didn't have any more time to waste on the issue since I found a work around until it is fixed.

    Best,

    Jenn
