OneNote sync failure error code: 0xE00009C8 bb0ur

Rebooted my PC today to finish Windows updates and now get this on all notebooks: "OneNote can't sync your notes right now. We'll keep trying. (Error code: 0xE00009C8 bb0ur)"

I've closed all notebooks, logged out and back in to my account and can open the notebooks but they all say "There aren't any sections here'.

The following I've done multiple times over the last 56 hours trying to resolve the issue: I've rebooted, performed O365 repair, SFC /SCANNOW, uninstalled/reinstalled O365, ran SARA to completely uninstall O365 the reinstalled, deleted the cache folder in the appdata folder, logged out of OneNote and back in, deleted all entries related to OneNote or my OneDrive account from credential manager. All of which did nothing to resolve the issue. I can open the notebooks on the web app, but when I try to open them in the desktop app from the web app it prompts me to login, I do, then it gives an error message: "We couldnt open that location. It might not exist or you might not have permission to open it." I'm able to create new notebooks from the desktop app tath get saved in my OneDrive, but I can't open any existing OneNote notebooks from my OneDrive.

I have multiple OneNote notebooks with hundreds of pages that I've accumulated of the years so I am not going to recreate (copy/paste) all of the content into new notebooks. Feels like a bad Windows update. Please help!

Hello Dime_Baggins,

I'm a Product Manager from the OneNote team and I thank you for taking the time to explain the issue in detail.

We acknowledge that there's a known sync issue which is affecting some of our users on OneNote Windows app. We are actively working to fix this issue. In the meanwhile, you can access your notes from the OneNote Web app at onenote.com. Thank you for understanding.

Hello OneNote community, thank you for your patience as we investigated this syncing issue. We've deployed a fix as of this morning and sync reliability is being restored today (Sept 3rd). To get your notes back in sync, right-click your notebook in the desktop app and select "Sync This Notebook Now." If you're still having issues by the end of the day, please feel free to post in this forum.

We really value all of our incredible users and thank you for sticking with us!

    Hi Jo,

I get your response to "CinBearcatr's" question (which I have as yet not looked at) as a "reply" to my post of earlier this evening (25th Sept 2200 ish)

For anyone reading my post above I tried repairing my OneNote 2016 app within Windows 10, first locally (no change) and then via the web.

I had not been running Office 365 only OneNote 2016 which by the way I found wonderful apart from the odd sync problem over the last few months i.e. not just early Sept.

However the "fix" :-(( removed OneNote 2016 and installed Office 365 with OneNote for Windows 10, which I find impossible to navigate even after a considerable amount of general investigation of every possible feature. e.g. I cannot see of a way to list all the tabs as the down arrow did in 2016.

This I know is the common problem when updating to a new version of any program, just with local OneNote not working it is the last thing I actually need.

Now when I start ON for Windows 10 I get the less than useful error....

"Error string with resource id '0x6E' is not found in the language id '0x809' Error: 0x803D0005 (Try again) "

and even when it does start "sync" creates some network traffic but nothing downloads.

I really like (NOT) the "Try again" part

    Regards from the UK.

As with many I have the "sync" (sink?) problem.

In my case I have had sync problem for months in 2024 since at least June.

The recent problem was a few days ago Sept 23rd maybe when my PC failed and I swapped the SSD to a spare PC.

As you may know this takes a few reboots for Windows to readjust to the new hardware but it normally works well.

However in this case all my programs worked but my OneNote entries for the last five years had gone.

(On the 25th I discovered how to access all my data via OneDrive and as far as I can see all is there)

I have not read all this post, in fact when hitting the "Replies (xxx) chevron" all I got was the chevron changing and could not see any of the replies.

Today I simply attempted to post as I am doing now.

All I have tried is the info on syncing by right clicking on the notebook name and then again on "Notebook Sync Status"

This gives me a screen I have accessed many times and shows my unused notebooks (created years ago as tests) all ok

My main notebook comes up with an "incomplete" message. If I look at performance and Ethernet in Task Mangler" I see quite a lot of trafffic but on looking at the local notebook (via the down arrow next to the last page on the right) the number of pages locally has not increased.

If there is another approach to getting it to sync successfully please let me know.

I am now going back to the various hits including this one to see if I can see replies etc.

    Regards

PS I don't like this editor.
