How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

    I have windows 11 pro and latest Microsoft 365 home edition. I do not have access to turning off copilot under file>options>copilot. Only copilot option is a check box for "collapse copilot summary automatically" but it does nothing. I do not want copilot. I do not want my documents in the cloud or copilot learning from them. I just renewed my subscription and this popped up. I will be looking for other office suites if you cannot turn off this unwanted unsolicited 'feature'.

    Good news from Australia. Option to toggle Copilot now appears in the [File] [Options] [Copilot] settings.

    When I click on file > account > account > privacy, the connected experiences > "turn on experiences that analyze your context" check box is greyed out. Microsoft will not allow me to turn off copilot. I called Microsoft Support and automated system will not let you speak to a human but redirects you to website Contact - Microsoft Support which gives the above instructions that do not work.

    Microsoft Support human beings, please provide solution.

    Dear Microsoft,

    Thanks to your atrocious insistence on forcing garbage Generative AI down my throat, I will be moving completely off your platform. No more Office, no more Windows, no more anything Microsoft. This is BS and it should have an OFF Switch. This should have been the very first thing to consider when you forced it on everybody. Let us turn it off.

    The language I wish to use here to express my unfettered rage at this decision would likely get me banned because none of what I have to say is polite.

    I will be cancelling all my Microsoft Services and I will no longer purchase Microsoft Products. You have one month (give or take) until my subscription expires to change this.
