How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

    This worked for me! Thank you!! I have cancelled my Office subscription because of this unwanted AI nonsense. The visual distraction of the copilot popup was enough to make me scream. I have downloaded LibreOffice to get the hang of it, and as soon as my subscription ends in March 2025 I am switching over to LibreOffice full time.

    Microsoft, SHAME ON YOU.

    Again these instrucitons seemto be for Windows. Can anyone provude similar for Mac?

    Good morning.

    I found myself with this problem today and it took me a very long (ANGER FUELED!!!!) time to find a good simple fix and that is to revert your office build. NO DOWNLOADS... just good old command prompt. Follow the below video. its old but it works...... I used Build number "17126.20126"

    Open a new doc and that stupid bubble and that dumb draft text should be gone :)

    Don't overlook the power of Google Sheets if you are replacing your Excel files. From my experience Google Sheets handles the tricky stuff a lot better.

    I am finding Ubuntu 24.04 a pleasure to use, I am on top of it after only a few days and all ties with Microsoft are now severed. Feels liberating after all the trashy behaviour Microsoft has displayed in recent years. Microsoft's glory days were Windows 7 and Windows 10. Whomever they have pulling the levers now has lost touch with the customer base and probably doesn't care as long as their bonuses keep flowing. I am guessing many have walked away and I have.
