How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Thank you.

Leah

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

HOORAY! IT IS OFF!!!!!!!!

I did my first subscription online about 5 years ago, then found it was much cheaper at Office Works up until December 2023, where it was either $99 or $110Aud for the Family version. Now Office Works is the new exorbitant price $179.

Windows - the great unfinished operating system! And every time changes are made, more errors are introduced. What I hate is the unrequested reset of all my settings.

Just for a laugh I asked CoPilot to draft a letter of complaint to Microsoft...

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the level of support I have received regarding the removal or disabling of the Copilot feature from your services. As a loyal Microsoft customer, I have always valued the innovative solutions and user-friendly interfaces your company provides. However, my recent experiences have led to significant frustration and disappointment.

Despite following the recommended steps and guidelines provided on your support pages, I have encountered numerous challenges in attempting to disable the Copilot feature. The instructions were unclear, and the process did not yield the intended results. Moreover, my attempts to seek assistance through customer support have been met with inadequate responses and long wait times. This has not only affected my productivity but also my overall experience with Microsoft products.

I believe that better support mechanisms and clearer instructions should be in place to assist users who wish to customize their experience by enabling or disabling specific features like Copilot. The current lack of efficient support is a major concern and does not align with the high standards I have come to expect from Microsoft.

I kindly request that you address this issue with urgency and provide a detailed, step-by-step guide to effectively disable the Copilot feature. Additionally, I would appreciate it if you could ensure that your support team is well-equipped to handle such requests promptly and efficiently.

Your immediate attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to a swift resolution and a more satisfactory support experience in the future.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
