How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Thank you.

Leah

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

HOORAY! IT IS OFF!!!!!!!!

Same issue here, just recently renewed my subscription. Money down the drain. I won't be renewing again - Libre Office works just fine; I've already downloaded it.

Reminds me of the stupid paperclip thing a few decades ago, but at least you could turn that off and it didn't drawl your data.

I don't know how much attention they pay, but there are other ways. Microsoft's online feedback portal is full of people wanting to disable copilot. You could go on there and upvote all the complaints about copilot, that's what I'm doing.

Microsoft needs to understand that one size does not fit all.

Outside of this Community Forum, does Microsoft actually read the comments posted on Copilot.

Since Copilot was installed in the Edge browser, I have not read any positive comments on Copilot, only how to remove it.

And now it is installed in Office 365 - Word, and the same question is asked - how to remove it..

Thanks Ryan. I've wasted several hours now searching, reading and trying out solutions to find these instructions are for Windows. I am on a Mac with MS 365 Family. Copilot made its uninvited and unwelcome presence felt just yesterday. I am judging short stories for a competition that expressly excludes work done using AI. The Copilot symbol all over any Word doc I open is not acceptable.

Please give me instructions on reverting to a pervious version of Word (2409) on Mac.
