This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

What an insensitive and ignorant reply!. This user (like thousands of others) does NOT want useless dross pushed on them. The copilot icon in Word is invasive and unnecessary and its sudden arrival without any option to opt out is sheer bloody arrogance.
Too time consuming and convoluted. Microsoft added it to my computer without being asked to so it can take it off.

My existing Word files and newly created Word files when I click on Auto-Save, does not work.
A Message displays 'AutoSave Isn't Available.
We couldn't save your file automatically due to your privacy settings.
To avoid losing your changes, please save the file using File > Save.
Privacy settings have not been changed.
When I go into look at Privacy Settings it's about collecting Diagnostic data and Connected experiences.
Yep, i noticed that. You cannot auto save if you want to turn off the privacy setting to disable copilot.

I want to walk as well! I am sicdk of Microsoft. Trouble is, I am not sure what else to go for, having used only Microsoft forever. I'm not a techie though I am fairly computer literate. Happy enough with it until they not only started to charge us each year (do they need the money??) but with updates that don't suit me, changes that make it work less efficiently for me than it did before, and now Copilot being the major irritation for us currently, which I definitely do NOT want or need, I need to get away from Microsoft!
I only use Word and Outlook really, the rest don't matter to me now, so I don't need anything fancy. I tried Google Docs for a Word alternative and that wasn't too bad.
Thinking I should research Libre or OnlyOffice to begin with....
