How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

    The only way to get copilot completely gone is to do what I did. I called and got a human being. I then had to ask for a refund. That allowed him to look up what is called Microsoft 365 family classic. He had to look it up by a special code. It wasn't listed as one of the regular options for a person to buy. He processed my refund and then started me on the Microsoft 365 family classic. It was something he said they were only trained on today. It seems like they've been getting lots of phone calls about this since the update hit. January 16th is when this copilot update went live for pretty much everyone.

    There is no user accessible way to get rid of Copilot. None. You have to talk to a real human and get a refund on your current subscription. Then buy a new subscription with the word Classic in it.

    There is no possibility for me to remove Copilot. It is another dumb move from Microsoft.

    Can anyone help to get rid of it?

    I have the same problem - Copilot has appeared on Word for Mac, and I can't seem to get rid of it. None of the options mentioned for Windows work for Mac. I need to disable:

    • the hover button for Copilot
    • the toolbar button for Copilot
    • any suggestions provided by Copilot

    For context, I'm a PhD in AI working in generative language modeling who's used Microsoft Word since Version 3 for DOS, and I'm seriously considering switching to a different word processor over the inability to disable this feature. I do not want AI features force-injected into the platform I use for my creative expression! There is NO good reason not to be able to disable this feature!
