This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

IN ORDER TO CUT OFF COPILOT YOU HAVE TO GO TO YOUR WORD DOCUMENT. YOU WILL SEE THE COPILOT ICON IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF YOUR DOCUMENT. RIGHT CLICK ON THE ICON AND FOLLOW THE PROMPTS. IT WILL CUT OFF COPILOT FOR WORD DOCUMENTS. HOPE THIS HELPS! IT WORKED FOR ME.
I found this same solution and it is helpful. There doesn't appear to be a way to remove the Copilot from the task ribbon, but this process does disable it.
I just don't understand who is asking for the increasing integration of large language generative text models in word processing software?
Please take Copilot out - not at all interested in having it there. Definitely do want it to help me write anything.
If you don't take it out soon, i'll just cancel my Microsoft subscription.

Based on the slimy way Microsoft has handled this, you can't get rid of Copilot. You can get into your account, cancel your current subscription,, and then options will come up to switch to a Microsoft Office Suite Plan with "Classic" in the name - and that supposedly will not have Copilot in it. However, their slimy behavior manifests in the requirement that you can't switch to the Classic subscription without Copilot until your current subscription renews. If your subscription renews soon, you're in luck. If your subscription doesn't renew for another year, you're stuck. But please consider pounding customer service and asking them to switch you now. Problem is: all the phone numbers for customer service and sales are blocked - with their phone system saying that they can't help you with Copilot, and then their phone system hangs up on you. Totally enraging.
I am STILL trying to get this copilot off my email and off my Word, as it does Not show up under apps and does Not show up in the Word options, no idea how to get rid of this program???? I see MANY others are having the same issue!
