This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

Most people on Macs have not found the supposed toggle buttons because they are not there. Not sure about what's going on with PCs.
I was not able to do this, as an option to turn off copilot did not appear on my screen. Were you in the online version of the PC-resident version. I use the latter, as I find the online version extremely visually cluttered (as though it was designed by Fisher-Price).

According to this thread 469 people have the same problem and feel exactly the way I do about Windows right now. This is ridiculous! I hope Quality Control is reading this and know what kind of problems they need to fix before sending it our way.
Everyday I opened my computer to some stupid changes MS did that is NOT what I need, use or want. I've wasted to much time today trying to remove copilot from my Word document from Edge. I prefer the desktop version but don't have time to do a clean install and fix the problems Windows caused with an update.
Could not agree more. This feels more like an invasion of my space than assistance. Something this invasive should not be installed by default. Only in response to an explicit user request.
