This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.
I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.
I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).
Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.
2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

You bring up a good point. Not only has Microsoft raised our prices and dumped an invasive AI tool on us all...but they have found a way to nickel and dime us on a subscription for which we've already paid.
The worst part is they use credits for all the "AI" features... so they have introduced microtransactions onto a subscriptions service.
Thank God for the person in Australia who answered this question. Some how my copilot icon was suddenly launched when I logged in to my word document this morning. I tried everything to get rid of it. Thanks a million for your instructions. Your instructions work exactly the same here in the US.
I don't use Windows in my personal life. I use Mac in my personal life because I hate Microsoft with a seething passion and I don't have the time to futz around with Linux the way I would want to. I know not everybody has Admins. My comment at the end about how MS doesn't make things easy for Consumers (being anybody who doesn't use Enterprise level software) I had hoped would convey that I know the general public (and Mac users) are generally hosed with this. The issue is that we (being Admins) get INSTRUCTIONS from Microsoft on how to turn this stuff off. They often bury it in the notes, but it's there so that Government Agencies and the like can protect proprietary data and information.
But consumers? Make it impossible to do without knowing command line and Registry Editing options (for Windows) or command line tools (for Mac), but since it's still "technically" possible, they're "meeting the needs of the consumer." This is why I ditched my MS Office Subscription and moved to SoftMaker NX. It's not perfect, but it's better than Office at this point.
It should be Microsoft's responsibility to make turning off things like this easy for the general public. They don't, because they want to justify the money they've spent and boost their usage numbers artificially. Make it hard to turn off, more people leave it on so it looks like more people are actively using it which looks good to shareholders. Yay capitalism.
France Uganda Canada Kenya Microsoft at this point. I don't plan on spending any more money with them at any point in the future.
This post assumes all of us have "admins" to handle software. Not accurate. Many of us work alone and do not have admins. Some folks using PCs have been able to disable copilot - but not for folks on Macs.
