How to disable or remove Copilot from Word (there is a solution - check 2nd edit)

This morning Copilot appeared in Word. I do not have a subscription for it, nor do I want it at all. It just appeared in what must have been an update.

I have the most up-to-date word running on a desktop with Windows 11.

I need to disable Copilot. I do not want to see it in the ribbon or right in the middle of the writing space (in the image).

Please advise how to disable, remove or just stop Copilot as I can't seem to remove it. I'm downright frustrated with it and didn't ask or request it. I did not buy it or subscribe to it.

Edit: Found the best solution was to roll back to a previous version before it updated. I replied further down and used a method that worked for me. Best I can suggest is do that and then start updating again when they allow us to turn stupid Copilot OFF.

2nd Edit: In the newest update (including in Australia) you can now turn it off in word for windows: File -> Options -> copilot (4th option) -> untick enable.

    I have been a Microsoft user for over 30 years.
    Since Windows 7, things have only gone downhill, both technically and visually. Many features are now making me downright aggressive.

    If there was a fully usable alternative OS to Windows, I would be gone as a customer forever!

    Why is the classic mode no longer available?
    Why can't all add-ons be uninstalled?
    Why don't they offer a clean OS?

    Many customers don't want virus like utlis like Co-Pilot, Onedrive etc. insinde the operationsystem.
    and why can't these annoying utils be uninstalled? I don't use them, have never used them and never will.

    Instead I have to patch everything out by hand for 20 hours after installation using GPO, Regedit, OO Shutup10++, W10 Privacy and so on? That wastes my lifetime.

    I was curious to know what Copilot was like, despite the many warnings about AI including its dreadful waste of electricity. Turns out that to use it I need to turn on AutoSave which requires Onedrive, which means my files would unnecessarily exist in Microsoft's cloud. That's not going to happen.

    Microsoft must immediately provide a way to disable copilot without breaking 365/office applications. I cannot understand why it is foisted on everyone willy nilly. It's dangerous.

    I should be able to manage without onedrive moving forward. I can probably also find alternatives for every 365 application except Access. If Microsoft refuses to make copilot optional, I'll consider buying access as a standalone app and ditching everything else.

    I cancelled my 365 subscription and purchased Office 2024. No co-pilot. Am finally able to use my Classic Outlook again! One-time purchase. No Subscription. No expensive Annual Renewal. Purchase it directly from Microsoft. There are tempting programs offered on the Internet. I fell victim to one. Their License was Not Valid. I wrestled with the program and the company! Thanks to Trustpilot, I got my money back. Check out MS Office 2024. There are 2 versions. Only difference: Outlook.
