OneDrive Personal Vault cannot unlock, error code 0x8004db90

I haven't been able to access my OneDrive Personal Vault in the past few days. I've tried multiple ways (PC, iOS app, webpage) but none works -

  • on the iOS app, it prompted me to setup personal vault even though I've done the setup a long time ago. After completing authentication, the app popped up with "Unable to complete Personal Vault setup, please try again in a few minutes". I tried removing the app and started fresh and that didn't help.
  • on webpage, after authentication, it popped up saying "There was a problem unlocking your Personal Vault". I tried both Edge and Chrome and got the same results.
  • on PC, onedrive can't unlock my personal vault, and popped up with error code 0x8004db90. I tried unlinking onedrive and relinking it and that didn't help.

Overall this feels like an authentication issue but somehow only affects personal vault access.. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it!

    Dear Chengkai Zhang

Thanks for raising your concerns in Microsoft Community.

We understand that you are having problems with your personal vault being unable to unlock.

What we need to confirm with you is whether the account can be logged in normally on the account homepage?

If you create a new account, check the personal vault under the new account, can it be accessed normally?

This is mainly to confirm whether the problem is related to the account. We recommend that you create a new Microsoft account first, try to access the personal vault on the client or web page, and check whether it can be accessed normally under the new account.

And you can try to add an alias to the original account, which is to refresh the account status. You can refer to this link to operate:

Add or remove an email alias in Outlook.com - Microsoft Support

After adding successfully, you can try to use the alias to re-login to OneDrive and try to access the personal vault again.

And recently we have also received feedback from users in other language sections, encountering similar problems.

Therefore, if the above steps are ineffective, we recommend that you submit it on thefeedback platform (if convenient, please provide as many details as possible, including pictures, copied videos, etc.), where there will be dedicated developers to pay attention to and comment on your feedback.

After sending feedback, you can share the feedback link in this forum so that other users with similar problems in the forum, including me, can vote for your feedback. The more votes you get, the easier it is to get the attention of the development team. Thank you for your cooperation.

Finally, although I can't help you further, I hope that the information I provide can help you find a better direction. If you need our help in the future, please feel free to contact us.

    Best Regards,

Tracy - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Hi Tracy,

Thanks for your reply. I've tried the your suggestions but it doesn't help :(

    1. I've tried creating a new Microsoft account and confirmed that I can access personal vault for the new account on the web page, but I still cannot access my own account's personal vault on the web page
    2. I've tried adding an alias to my original account, and also making that alias the primary email and re-login to OneDrive. That still doesn't help.

I have submitted it on the feedback platform here https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/idea/7b9c38eb-d559-ef11-b4ad-000d3a0e6a3a Hopefull it get picked up :(

    Hi Tracy,

I have the exact same problem (Error Code 0x8004db90).

It started a few days ago.

I tried various things like resetting Onedrive, but had no luck.

    Tracy,

I get the exact same issue if I'd like to access my Onedrive via my browser (Edge).
