The latest Microsoft 365 Update has added a Copilot function to Word. Now every time I create a new paragraph, a little copilot symbol appears in the left-hand margin prompting me to use copilot. It is extremely annoying and distracting. How do I stop this symbol appearing, or better, remove copilot from Word?

I'm sure this was very helpful for people who speak the (computer) language. However, for mere humans like me who just want a 2-minute, minimal effort removal of the hellish CoPilot from their lives - it's no use whatsoever. I'm going back to Libre.
Unfortunately, there isn't any other way of doing this. You have to switch to a "Classic" subscription.
I just tried calling Microsoft help line and this is all they suggest doing. They transferred me to an inept customer service rep who asked for my email 3 times, then said he sent an email for confirmation - which I didn't receive - then said thanks for confirming!!! I didn't get an email and I didn't click anything to confirm the discussion!!! Then I must have been on hold for 20 minutes of silence and no one came back to me. I hung up. What a joke.
I lodged one complaint a week ago - no response – so I just lodged a second compliant. But I don't think there will be any response to that either.
The only way a company will learn is with people cancelling their subscriptions - but what else is there to go on all Australian Government departments use this? There is no worthy alternative.
As I pay for a Family Subscription each and every year, why should I have to go back to a previous older version and still pay for the latest just to get rid of an intrusive feature? A friends son, who is at Uni, has been warned re use of AI in assignments. This Co Pilot farce is just begging to have students fail. Microsoft - please make it a function we can turn off or on without losing functionality.

Note to others following this solution, at the page linked below, click on the 'privacy settings' link within the page to find how to access your privacy settings, then uncheck the four 'Connected experiences' options. Restart required.

Hello Ben,
I understand the concern and inconvenience this change causes.
Since Copilot is a connected service, it is my understanding that disabling the Microsoft 365 online experience accomplishes the same thing.

But this can also cause other online services to be unavailable. In the meantime, click File->Feedback in the Office app to let Microsoft development team hear your valuable thoughts.

Ian's solution worked for me, to disable Copilot in Word, without having to rollback versions.
Simply disable all 'Connected experiences' under 'Account Privacy'. Then restart Word.
