A OneDrive folder has been shared with me, but in windows File Explorer, it appears as a link rather than a folder when I add it as a shortcut to OneDrive "My Files". How can I fix this so the shortcut appears as a folder instead of a link?

This is unacceptable. Microsoft should be able to fix this problem within a more reasonable timeframe. Many colleagues have switched to Google Drive and Dropbox because OneDrive's sync folder does not work properly on Windows—which is quite ironic.
@OliverFox3 Unfortunately, the only next step is to wait. It is not pleasant, especially when some accounts have switched over. Please note that SharePoint is completely transparent to the end user. This is the new backend they have moved OneDrive to, which is causing the headache. Once everyone is converted they will all be SharePoint in the backend, as I understand it.
This makes sense as the accounts with 'search' are still working and the ones without 'search' now have this silly hyperlink rather than a real folder. Any idea on next steps? As the are family 365 subscriptions we can't use sharepoint.
Based on the explanation by @Mike-E_wins I have further checked the issue on my onedrive account. I have an not migrated "old" OneDrive and my peer has a already migrated account. He is sharing a folder to me. This folder is a "hyperlinked" folder in my account, which will not synced to my Windows Explorer.
I own a very old OneDrive account since SkyDrive times - so I imagine that based on the history of this forum thread we have to wait longer to get migrated and this ugly shared folder issue resolved. :-(

Hi @AlexOng1 please be aware this is not a software/client-based problem but an account-based problem. It doesn't matter the client you have installed, but it's based on the backing account which has to be migrated over to the new SharePoint backend the OneDrive team has been working on for the past year.
The tell-tale sign is to visit your account here:
https://onedrive.live.com/?v=managestorage
And if you see "Search" on the bottom left nav this means you are on the older version:
I refresh this every day to see if my account has been upgraded.
Thanks Mike, indeed it appeared so per your explain; in compared, issue does happened only on new upgraded version.
Hopefully there is a workaround version.
