OneDrive shortcut appears as an internet shortcut instead of a folder

A OneDrive folder has been shared with me, but in windows File Explorer, it appears as a link rather than a folder when I add it as a shortcut to OneDrive "My Files". How can I fix this so the shortcut appears as a folder instead of a link?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Eric,

I’ve been facing the same issue for the past two weeks—a shared folder that was converted into an internet shortcut. After reading through this discussion, it’s clear that this is a long-standing, widespread problem affecting multiple users.

For me, this is a critical blocker that must be resolved immediately. My workflow depends on offline access, as I frequently work on the move without an internet connection. I rely on updating my documents offline and syncing them once I’m online. However, with the folder converted to a shortcut, I can’t use the “Always keep on this device” feature to store actual files locally—only the link. This prevents me from accessing and modifying my documents offline, creating major disruptions in my work.

    Hi  Eric Mungai,

Thanks for raising your concerns in Microsoft Community.

We are aware of the issue and are working on resolving it. The url files will automatically convert back to folders when the issue is resolved. For now, we recommend accessing shared folders that are in this state on OneDrive.com.

It doesn't seem normal to me that Microsoft hasn't been able to solve such a problem after so much time. This situation seems like a covert termination of a feature. Apparently, those of us who use this feature are not given much importance.
