Urgent: Files Reverting to Older Versions on OneDrive

Dear Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing an issue where many of my recently used files on OneDrive have reverted to older versions over the past few months. It is only today that I have discovered this issue. I access OneDrive on two PCs, my phone, and frequently online at work.

Typically, I notice a file has been overwritten with an older version when I check the version history and see two entries with the exact same date and time. Often, the overwritten version’s file size matches that of an older version from a few entries back on the list. There is no consistency in the dates and times when this issue occurs. It seems to be happening randomly. I've found that this has occurred with hundred's of my files.

This problem has been very frustrating and has significantly undermined my confidence in OneDrive. Could you please advise me if you're aware of any such issues and if you're working to resolve them. Also, can you please advise me as to how I can prevent this from happening in the future?

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards,

Michael

Edit: Further to the above, I've also discovered that OneDrive doesn't sync automatically between my PC and Laptop when I make changes to files. I have to quit and then re-start OneDrive on the other computer in order for it to sync and receive the updated file. It also doesn't automatically sync when I attempt to restore to a previous version. In order for it to update the file back to the pervious version I have to quit and re-start OneDrive (or possibly just pause and resume syncing, which I never tried).

I am having the same issue. This month (Dec 2024), several Excel files saved in OneDrive reverted to their versions from 6 months ago, even though many changes have been made since then (and always saved). I restored previous versions of the files to fix this, but I'm not sure if they were the most recent versions. Very annoying.

It is definitely worth having a different backup source, well away from Microsoft I’m not sure even if they are attempting to sort out the problem as many people are losing data, this should just not be happening from such a large and trusted company as Microsoft

I have now got another source for backing up every day in case this happens again, it’s just too risky

Can you please share what your backup source is? Are you doing it manually? I have Norton and found that it is only backing up a portion of my files - not everything. Thank you.

"Last week OneDrive silently rolled back two of my files, one Excel, one PowerPoint. [...]

This is NOT a Sync issue between machines. I have one machine connecting to one OneDrive account."

Thanks for posting this. Using only one PC and having the same issue is indeed new information.

that could be of use to someone trying to determine the cause of the problem--IF such a person exists.

I had a similar problem around New Years Day. Multiple files that I update (from multiple computers) on a weekly, or monthly, or random schedule, were suddenly missing all information that I had added since October. Let me restate that for the doubting Thomas moderator: these files were not all opened on the same PC on the same day and somehow subject to a single user-initiated error. Some hadn't been opened for weeks since they were last updated, and yet they all reverted to the October timeframe. And version history was no help--it showed no versions with data newer than October, even though I update two of the files every week. Luckily, I'd made a backup of one of my systems on Christmas Day, so I could revert to an "older," but more updated version.

Like others here, my faith in OneDrive is shaken. I've had a 365 Family subscription for maybe 5 years now, and never doubted that I was covered because I could ALWAYS revert to an older version and be almost up to date. Now I know that not only am I not "covered" by OneDrive, but I may actually be sabotaged by OneDrive. OneDrive was supposed to be a way to avoid losing work, not the reason work was lost. But, of course, it must be my fault.

P.S. Today I opened an Excel file that I was puzzled to see showed a "Date modified" of August 11, even though I was sure I had added to it since then (it's a record of vehicle maintenance for 4 vehicles). Inside there were entries from December, as I had "remembered", but the "Date modified" says August 11. How does that work? The General tab of File properties also shows a Modified date of August 11, 2024 but the Details tab shows a Date last saved of December 13, 2024. So a Save isn't a Modification. Oh, I see, back in August I must have entered the odometer readings and the cost for maintenance that was to be performed up through December, then I must have opened the file in December and saved it without modifying it. Yes, that all makes sense. It is my fault again.

Use Version History to restore the files:

Restore a previous version of a file stored in OneDrive
