Urgent: Files Reverting to Older Versions on OneDrive

Dear Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing an issue where many of my recently used files on OneDrive have reverted to older versions over the past few months. It is only today that I have discovered this issue. I access OneDrive on two PCs, my phone, and frequently online at work.

Typically, I notice a file has been overwritten with an older version when I check the version history and see two entries with the exact same date and time. Often, the overwritten version’s file size matches that of an older version from a few entries back on the list. There is no consistency in the dates and times when this issue occurs. It seems to be happening randomly. I've found that this has occurred with hundred's of my files.

This problem has been very frustrating and has significantly undermined my confidence in OneDrive. Could you please advise me if you're aware of any such issues and if you're working to resolve them. Also, can you please advise me as to how I can prevent this from happening in the future?

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards,

Michael

Edit: Further to the above, I've also discovered that OneDrive doesn't sync automatically between my PC and Laptop when I make changes to files. I have to quit and then re-start OneDrive on the other computer in order for it to sync and receive the updated file. It also doesn't automatically sync when I attempt to restore to a previous version. In order for it to update the file back to the pervious version I have to quit and re-start OneDrive (or possibly just pause and resume syncing, which I never tried).

    Hi,

Do you know if this issue was fixed by MS OneDrive team?

We need some info about it because it seems that the problem still exists.

What is the status from OneDrive team. Also what causes the issues? What was the reason of such things.

Are you sure the most recent files were uploaded successfully to OneDrive in the first place?

    Hello,

I recently experienced the exact problem as desribed by the OP above, with a number of files reverting to versions from back in July. So firstly, thank you to the OP for posting about the problem - I was starting to question my sanity for a while before finding this.

I reported my problem to Onedrive support, they were helpful, said it was a known issue, and I managed to recover my files via the version history at onedrive.live.com .

However, until Microsoft fix this, my confidence in Onedrive is shattered. Until there's a fix (or until I find a suitable alternative product) I'm having to include a datestamp in filenames to ensure no changes can be reverted.

    So...

    Dear Microsoft Support,

Please can you tell me where to find a bug report reference for this issue which I can track until it is fixed? Or otherwise how can I know when a fix has been provided please?

    Thanks,

    Paul

I don't understand why this is happening. It's never happened to me. If I can figure it out, I'll get back to you.

Click on "Ask a new question" at the top of this page, and maybe someone else can help.

Hi and thank you CraiglLong. My onedrive is open and i am signed in. When i delete the duplicate from my hard drive somehow it is downloaded again from the onedrive cloud service. I thought deleting it from my hard drive should delete it from the cloud as well, but its not happening. If i delete it from the onedrive cloud then the file from my hard drive is uploaded back up. It seems i have to delete from both locations at the exact same time which is now impossible because of the thousands of duplicates i have. ( my files went from 270gb to nearly 800gb) however I just now , before receiving your very kind reply, resolved the issue by deleting the files in onedrive folder and uninstalling onedrive altogether and have decided to no longer use it. Sadly , I've been trying to upload my files now for well over a year, but how much can one take. I never experienced this with any other online storage solution but sadly onedrive comes with an office 365 subscription……
