I can't sync or download a shared folder in OneDrive

This just randomly started happening a few days ago and I can't figure out why. I previously had a shared folder synced to my computer from OneDrive and then suddenly it disappeared from my file explorer. I looked at the shared folder to see if I have "can edit" capabilities and I do but the only options that show are to add a shortcut to the folder or to download. However if I click download nothing happens. When I add the link, it opens the web version of OneDrive and not the offline folder that I need.

My OneDrive web also doesn't have a sync button at the top of the page or in the settings drop down menu.

I've tried unlinking and relinking the account. I've tried restarting the computer. I've tried logging out and then back in. I've tried uninstalling OneDrive and reinstalling it. I've made sure it's the latest version. I'm running Windows 10/11. I've tried creating a completely different account. I've tried adding the account to the upgraded family subscription version. I've tried reaching out to Microsoft support for help twice. Can someone please tell me what to do?

Nothing. I did read somewhere (I thought it was here but there is another similar thread about exactly the same issue on MAC Onedrive) that it might be a windows 10 issue... might function with Windows 11... But I upgraded to windows 11 on my 3 year old PC and got the blue screen of death. Total malfunction.. the PC wasn't capable of supporting Windows 11 despite offering it. Hopeless. I'm going back to pen and paper.

Status check on this issue. It has been 8 months now and I still only have a URL link. When will I get back the ability to have the shared files on my PC?

As mentioned, same problem since about March 2024. So irritating. I have sent multiple emails and get broken English replies calling me "you are very dear to me". I have never felt the power of big business until I met with this absolute wall of inability to access any useful help.

    1. can only open shared file and edit on web
    2. can't upload a new file to the shared file if you aren't the owner.

SO.... we have a slightly updated work around... Not ideal but something and it might help someone else..

    1. You can at least now edit on desktop. (top right, edit button, drop down, option to open on desktop.)

2)The other person saves their new file to a folder they have now also shared with me. When I open their file on the web, under the "edit" drop down menu, I open on the desktop. Then I save a copy to our main shared file where they can also edit (& now edit on desktop!) and I delete the old copy in their shared file.
