Update error code 30088-27 Office 2021 what to do to get corrected????

Good news! I found a non-MS solution to my previous post advising Office 2021 no longer updatied after the July update 2406. I tried every workaround suggested by others with no luck, including reinstalling Office from my MS account.

However, I kept trying and last night was able to install the August Office update 2407 by using my Avast Suite, specifically Avast Cleanup Premium’s “App Manager” updater feature.

Unlike the MS Office updater that repeatedly fails and provides a useless error code 30088-27, Avast Clean Up Premium recognized my Office 2021 needed the August update, so it downloaded and installed it. My Office 2021 is now reporting Version 2407 (Build 17830.20138).

I will email Avast and let them know their updater took care of a ridiculous MS Office mess that MS is ignoring and is simply unacceptable to licensed MS Office users. MS has again lost it’s customer focus but thankfully someone else is stepping in. Wow…. What a global embarrassment for MS….

If you just want to update you can manually run the following command on an admin command prompt where x = the version you want. No need to pay for Avast Premium.

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=xx.x.xxxxx.xxxxx

This doesnt solve the underlying issue though.

I agree the Avast fix doesn’t solve the problem with the Office update function but it does provide a workaround.

You have to copy and paste the entire string, as is (with quotes), and have to run it from an elevated command prompt as Admin. You also need to ensure you have a valid version/build inserted.

Instead of regressing MS 365 as MSFT suggests, why not perform an "online repair" via settings---apps ?? The MS 365 level then increases to the current code level as reported by the "about" button. I would like to think that the actual code has been updated to this level as well? On my Win11 computer, I am now seeing Build 17830.20138 click-to-run current channel via this approach despite this 30088-27 update error. I am just a normal retail customer of MS 365, not enrolled in any special developer or insider program.
