Why is OneDrive so terrible?

OneDrive is the feature that finally made me give up on windows permanently. This is just straight up deceptive data theft. It constantly re-enables itself with updates. It points other programs pathing back to it even after it was disabled which re-activates it when it is referenced. At this point Steam is the only reason I have windows installed at all, and as soon as I have a workaround for that it's gone from my life forever.

Don't. Touch. My. Data. Without. My. Consent. Simple stuff. This behavior never was and will never be acceptable. Theft is not acceptable. Pre-emptively moving my stuff or changing my settings without my consent or knowledge to "accidentally" move my private files into the cloud is still theft no matter how you wrap it. It is not accidental when it is intentionally programmed to be deceptive, convoluted to disable, reset to defaults whenever an update happens, and moves/edits/deletes files by default without permission. Theft is theft and no word salad non-answer will make it anything except that.

I don't care if that's how it was designed, it was designed poorly to slurp up private end user files without end user knowledge. The replies forwarding to "contact your administrator", this is windows home I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR FFS. God forbid anyone on this site ever recognize a behavior that is massively unwanted as a mistake or give a real answer to a question like "how do I permanently disable this thing that keeps re-enabling itself" with yet another instruction to disable the settings that revert on their own anyways, which is generally never the question that was actually asked.

It is completely unhelpful to give canned corporate network answers to home users. Given that they can't handle basic home pc use, I wouldn't put this garbage in a business where trade secrets have to be protected if my life depended on it.

They are so desperate to have your information and chaining you to the cloud is one way to get all of your data, have it updated frequently, and finally have you pay for it. This is such a disease it makes all of the apps useless too. I just spent a couple of hours trying to figure out the backups for one note and finally gave up in frustration. Now, it seems, I won't be using one note any time soon. For some reason Microsoft thinks they have a right to your data. Boo Boo hiss hiss! Good software rendered useless because Microsoft demands control of your data. How is this allowed?

What they ought to have done is create a software with a user interface that actually allow the user to pick what services they want. Don't gaslight us dude. This software sucks, the whole idea of making your data disappear into the cloud with little to no user interaction is stupid. It's about money and getting your information.

I work self employed as an administrator for another busines.

They use OneDrive.

Every, single, tedious time I want to look at anything, I have to sign in to microsoft. This can be 20 or 30 times a day (don't bother with keep me signed it, as it simply doesn't work).

As has already been said, why would you have a file in the cloud, that when deleted, automatically wipes it on every other device? It's knuckle-dragingly cretinous.

Here's another single-cell brain wave example - one of many: There is a password protected spreadsheet for the company I deal with in their OneDrive that I have shared file access to. It has a list of over 200 passwords, which I need to access regularly. When Microsoft decide at random that I need to change my password for Microsoft / OneDrive, it means that because I can't then log in at that point, I cannot locate the current password (you have to put that in first, then enter your new password twice), so I have to save a seperate password protected spreadsheet on my pc somewhere, or write it down, as otherwise, I'm screwed. That means I have to frequently cross reference the password spreasdsheats to ensure both are correct and up to date. It's totally ill thought-through. EXCEPT, that it isn't; they know EXACTLY what they are doing; They can't be that stupid. It's a data-raping exercise as per all the IT companies these days.

For the Trekies out there: It makes me wish for one of those planets where the populous appear to live simple rural lives of peace, tranquilty and harmony, and it turns out they were super-advanced and realised that all high-tech did, was ruin their lives. Considering a dumb phone yet???

Unfortunately, I am locked into this spiral of despair- for now - though the company I work with are beginning to realise just how costly this facility has become in terms of lost time/constant issues and dreadful functionality.

I've just lost some files - same story as everyone, I just don't understand why these things are made for big L's instead of W's like how greedy can you be when you are already a trillion dollar company then you go and make algorithms to make people confused. I understand there are solutions but there shouldn't be problems that surface like this in the first place. It is so deliberate with what happens without your consent and then you are scratching your head like a muppet then you realize Microsoft to underhand you only then to try and make more money off you " Lets upgrade you to a bigger storage blah blah "

FYI I never opted for OneDrive to sync my whole desktop only for it to be deleted by accident thinking why is there a duplicate in my drives? Then the files get corrupted whilst trying to recover them from the OneDrive recycle bin and now every time I open OneDrive - it closes in an instant. Tried all the honey remedies nothing worked. My only solution now is to just keep this thing uninstalled forever.

Don't make the same mistake people. Microsoft will always never be held accountable for memories that are lost. Instead they take it away permanently.
