Why is OneDrive so terrible?

Why would MS think that anyone would want the entire contents of their personal hard drive to be uploaded to a cloud? And further, why would it make sense to delete the local files if someone deleted them from the cloud? In what world does this make sense. It is a poorly designed system and it's a huge violation of privacy of your customers. I have nearly lost all my files because I "deleted" them from OneDrive. I guess I stupidly thought that my local files were safe, as I did not try to delete them. OneDrive, in its ineptitude, decided for me that since I didn't want them on some server somewhere, that I must not need them at all.

Please move to an opt-in model instead of the current opt-out model. And upon opting in, there should be a tutorial of the functionality of the software. A tutorial that an idiot can understand. And it should default to sharing a single folder, not the entirety of a computer.

If it was designed this way to artificially increase "usage" of the terrible software, you did a great job. But you increased usage to impress whoever at the cost of your customers' happiness and at the cost of their privacy. As a basic rule, people don't like their personal possessions (including data) being taken without their knowledge or consent. If you are going to steal our data anyway, at least be sneakier about it.

    The point is that One Drive presents itself as an automatic backup option when in fact it is useless. Apparently it is not supposed to be used directly, but rather we are supposed to work on our local computers and then rely on it to be synced. The problem is that it refuses to sync photos, and if it can't back up photos it can't back up anything.
    Not being able to use it directly pretty much defeats the usefulness of shared folders.

    Perhaps I have misunderstood, but there is so much jargon in the instructions that it is pretty much nonfunctional.

    In retrospect, it is best that local files can't be synced since that action apparently removes them from the local drive. Or something.

    I feel your frustration.

    I was an early adopter for one drive and loved it. I used to be able to sync my one drive to a thumb drive, it was so cool.

    I travelled the world with complete confidence of having all my files available…

    And then…. The changes began to happen… changes that you could slowly see were meant to hijack my files to keep me in the Microsoft ecosystem. I also began to “lose files”.

    I hung on as long as I could, but 2 years ago I stopped using one drive for any backup purposes, and it was a pain and time consuming to get those files out of the cloud. (I have worked with AwS and Google at work as well as Microsoft for many of the customers we have migrated to cloud… ms is the worst, and I predicted they would eventually take over AWS ( back in 2014 , and how stupid I was. )

    My only guess is Microsoft is solely focused on corporate/ enterprise one drive use through MS365 … but I’ve taken the hint and I do not even use one drive for anything , completely uninstalled it.

    I am not a Microsoft hater, but fast becoming one…. I own a surface laptop studio 2, surface laptop 4, surface laptop go, a surface book, 2 Xbox series x, a series. S and a one s…. Plus I bought for family a surface laptop 4, and 2 surface laptop Gos. So I was all in…. I’m slowly transitioning to Apple and Mac … but hoping Microsoft comes back …I’ve put them on a buying freeze…Including accessories … mostly because of one drive…. OneDrive shows they are either incompetent or intentional doing bad actions…

    One Drive is horrible. not sure why they are trying to force feed this garbage to their customers. has caused me many problems deleting things from it, that I didnt want deleted.

    I'd get rid of OneDrive completely if I hadn't copied folders to it. Now they have disappeared from my PC, so the only place they exist is in OneDrive. So I can't get rid of it as long as my Music Folder contents are in it and nowhere else.

    Do not trust Microsoft.
