Why would MS think that anyone would want the entire contents of their personal hard drive to be uploaded to a cloud? And further, why would it make sense to delete the local files if someone deleted them from the cloud? In what world does this make sense. It is a poorly designed system and it's a huge violation of privacy of your customers. I have nearly lost all my files because I "deleted" them from OneDrive. I guess I stupidly thought that my local files were safe, as I did not try to delete them. OneDrive, in its ineptitude, decided for me that since I didn't want them on some server somewhere, that I must not need them at all.
Please move to an opt-in model instead of the current opt-out model. And upon opting in, there should be a tutorial of the functionality of the software. A tutorial that an idiot can understand. And it should default to sharing a single folder, not the entirety of a computer.
If it was designed this way to artificially increase "usage" of the terrible software, you did a great job. But you increased usage to impress whoever at the cost of your customers' happiness and at the cost of their privacy. As a basic rule, people don't like their personal possessions (including data) being taken without their knowledge or consent. If you are going to steal our data anyway, at least be sneakier about it.

Former office 365 advocate, slowly migrating from surface laptop studio 2, surface laptop 4, surface laptop go, Xbox series x (x2) series s, one s…. This reply is really to all those who have contributed to this thread from the get-go.
It's universally apparent that as per, Microsoft (or should it be Microforce given how they go about things these days), are not designing products for the benefit of their consumers, they're designing products to exploit their consumers; it's a cynical data-muncher situation.
I'm not saying it'll be a panacea, but I've come to the inevitable conclusion that Microsoft & Windows has shot it's bolt with me and most of it's clients with extreme prejudice. Enough already. It's time to go. My new Mac Mini M4 arrived today, and even though those I collaborate with work-wise currently use PC's (as I have for decades), means I'll need to install 365 for Mac and outlook for Mac, then despite needing to assimilate a new OS, it's just GOT to be worth it - and there are some great tutorials out there for Mac beginners, so not that hard to do in reality.

I totally agree. I'm the 'idiot' you talk about! But I'm not an idiot. If I knew what I know now I never would have pushed the sync button. I don't want to know anything about One Drive, but I've already been stitched up.
I have a mammoth spreadsheet with many hyperlinks to docs on my computer. MS thought it was best if they copied all my docs to their cloud (not and bad idea in an ideal world where everybody is connected to the cloud wherever they are, but...). In so doing they transposed all my local hyperlinks to their URL! Now I cannot access anything without going through the entire spreadsheet recreating the old hyperlinks. Totally nuts.
It would be nice to hear back from Microsoft, like a real person not a bot.
