Faulty 'Recent' document list in OneDrive, File Explorer and Microsoft 365

I understand there is a bug that engineers are working on and that this 'bug' is a big worry for many of us, ie. I'm seeing a 'Recent' list (shows in my File Explorer and on OneDrive) which includes documents that I did not open recently, and gives wrong dates of when opened. My Microsoft 365 Word files are synced to OneDrive. I use Windows 11.

I came across an additional worry concerning this today. I opened my Microsoft 365 Word and found the faulty 'Recent' list there, too. I clicked on the latest item on the list (which I had, in fact, opened yesterday via Explorer), and I got a message warning me that the file was a potential security risk. This is the main file of a novel I am working on and am doing editing each day. I find I can still open the document via File Explorer with no such warning and the document did seem ok when I opened it this way, but is it safe to do so? I have a deadline to finish my editing and need assurance there is no security problem and that this 'Recent' list problem will soon be rectified.

I have only noticed the wrong 'Recent' list in the past week or two, but there are other threads about this, one I have seen goes back to October with people telling of this same issue. In a later thread (in November) we were told it's a known bug that is currently being investigated. Please can I have an update on when it is likely to be fixed. Meanwhile, are our files safe to continue accessing and working on?

Same here. This morning, 3/25/24, i opened MS Excel and all recent documents were there. Not sure what happened over the weekend but i am glad it is working again. Big productivity gain!

Same issue here - Just started today (3/21/2024) and is very frustrating given impact to usability and productivity.

What is the status of the investigation and estimated timeframe for a solution?

    Please advise - thanks...

    Pete

Not sure why however my issue mysteriously resolved itself on Sat 3/23 morning - about 2 days after it began.

When the issue occurred for some unknown reason it only occurred on one Windows PC (Desktop) and NOT another PC (Surface) bother were logged into the same Office 365 user.

Not sure what occurred overnight that resulted in the issue no longer occurring on 3/23 however I am happy that my ease of use and productivity is back.

I'm having what I assume is a similar issue. For me tghe issue is that although the file is in my companies one drive (confirmed by file path of the recent file) it is displaying as being in a former clients one drive in the recent file list. Interestingly it shows up as being in my one drive when the recent files list syncs and displays on an older machine.

Thanks to this post my assumption is now that this is linked to the bug outlined here and that:

    • Something in the setup of the specific PC is causing my one drive and sharepoint to display as prior clients in the recent docs list
    • It's something sticky, possibly in the registry that is creating this link (removing both office 365 and one drive and reinstalling has not helped)

I'm not sure whether this is directly a security or productivity issue, but it is pretty unhelpful.

    • It's cost me at least 6 hours trying to figure out what on earth is going on
    • As we face increasingly advanced cybersecurity threats it's at best VERY UNHELPFUL to have the location of a document brought into question
    • I'd like to share links to objects within one drive to a prospective client. It will look very unprofessional if it appears that I'm sharing links from another companies one drive. I have no idea how this will look when shared with clients.

As a supposed leader in security I would hope that Microsoft would take the erosion in confidence that this 'bug' will cause seriously

Hi SAM 2DS, your observations and comments are correct. Yes, as in your case, this problem cost me more than 6 hours researching and trying out different workaround (but none work). This problem started as a Microsoft OneDrive sync problem, but it spread to hurt the other Microsoft products like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. The fact that RECENT folder is corrupted is definitely a productivity issue for me, and it appears to be a security issue as well, based on what you described. Microsoft just gave me another reason to look for alternative like LibreOffice or Google Docs.

This IS a major productivity issue because now we have to open the file explorer to search through the many files in whatever drive we keep the Word, Excel, or Powerpoint files to find them before we can open them. This WILL be a major productivity issues if you have to open at least 20 different Word, Excel, PowerPoint files everyday at work everyday.
