Onedrive's downloading speed is tremendously slow

Hi everyone,

I'm confused by the fact of Onedrive's downloading speed to be very slow. I'm trying to download my video file from Onedrive and the speed is 1 MB/s only, having internet channel speed 100 mbps. Download speed from competitor's servers (Mega.nz, FREE Plan) is 10 MB/s, which utilizes my whole channel. The funny thing is that the upload speed was 10 MB/s to Onedrive's servers, but the download speed is only 1 MB/s.

I've removed any limits on download speed in Onedrive app, updated the app, changed TCP congestion protocol to BBR, but the result is the same.

I'm quite aware of other complaints on Onedrive's download speed, but still hope for a resolution. I've sent my question to Onedrive's tech team, but here I'm posting to:

  1. Get more ideas on how to solve this issue
  2. Attract more attention to the problem

Having the same problem, the org I work for shifted to Onedrive a few years back. We are now shifting to Google as being a no-profit, we get a lot of space for free, but trying to download the files is all over the place. I grabbed a few multi-gigabyte folders earlier today and got sort of reasonable speeds. At the moment I'm pulling down another one and getting around 5Mb/s on a 140Mb/s link.

The quality of MS's service is just rubbish, and they clearly are either deliberately reducing download speeds for large transfers to prevent people moving services, or they just have sh!tty bandwidth and have no clue what they are doing. Either way, they aren't competent to hold other people's data.

OneDrive has woeful download speeds. I used it as our organisation uploaded local shared drive contents (11Gb!) to OneDrive following a cyberattack. Now cannot download before the universe ends as it's too slow doing it manually.

Manual downloads need to be single files as a Zip always fails with errors.

Syncing on my macbook crashes as the app is godawful on older macs.

Only solution seems to be syncing to my mac mini over a period of days.

I personally use Google now as iCloud also terrible (never syncs when you want it to, files missing, cant force sync etc). Drive not without its own problems but it seems to work better than the others.

Ideally I will switch to a SFTP store as working on the cluster for work and using Filezilla or RSYNC is a much better experience for moving large files around. I think the other systems only work for a small number of small documents.

Today is August 2nd 2024. I have to download a 6gb photoshoot portfolio from a client's OneDrive for a job. I started the download yesterday. I have a 600 mb conection speed. The over night avarege download speed was lower then 1mb. It's has passed over 12 hours and it is not even close to 20%. I was sopposed to finish my work for this client today at 10 am. Right now is 8 am. I spent 30min doing a research regarding this problem. I'v found similar threads in diffente soucers dating back from 2019. Not one official response or aknoleg of the problem by Microsoft. Luckly I don't have any personal files on OneDrive and will never have.
