Onedrive's downloading speed is tremendously slow

Of course if you only have a few files then using OneDrive to download is a pain but not insurmountable.

BUT if you have 1,000's of files (like a lot of people do - that's the purpose of using a Cloud drive) then it's not useful to use your proposed method. Thanks anyway.

We are all living with Onedrive issues as a showstopper for more than one Christmas now and one more Christmas in a month now. I have asked Microsoft for refund of laid money for onedrive subscription. All should ask refund.

Similar problem for me. I have a 64bit Windows laptop and 800Gb of photos and video that I want to download from OneDrive (and then move to an Apple environment). As discussed / commented there are plenty of people with the same, slow download issue.

To work around it somewhat I am now using the OneDrive app which is installed on the laptop.

I have reasonable hard drive space on my laptop so I am able to (a) select a folder in OneDrive then (b) right click to access "Always keep on this device".

This downloads the folder/files at a more acceptable (but not fast) 3-4MB/s compared to 50-120KB/s from the browser. I can then move them to a large SSD until I'm ready to start uploading to Apple.

This process may be obvious to everyone already (if so my apologies) but it has helped me commence the process of moving my files without waiting weeks/months.

I think it's interesting that there are so many forums posts about this topic, and, every time it seems that a Microsoft support agent chimes in with all these tips for the end user to try to improve performance, seemingly implying (or outright saying) that the issue is not Microsoft but rather that customer.

Let's be very clear here, the issue is Microsoft and it is throttling. Not only that, but Microsoft very clearly says that they throttle OneDrive and Sharepoint. Hopefully this helps folks at least in understanding what the issue is and stops people from needlessly troubleshooting their own setup ad infinitum.

Of particular note, a few key pieces you may want to take away from these published pages:

• We have implemented tighter throttling limits on background apps (migration, DLP and backup solutions) during weekday daytime hours. You should expect that these apps will achieve very limited throughput during these times. However, during evening and weekend hours for the region, the service will be ready to process a significantly higher volume of requests from background apps.
• Can Microsoft turn off the throttle to help me with migration? No. Throttling is in place to protect the reliability and availability of the service. Throttling rules cannot be disabled or suspended.

I can confirm from considerable experience doing many company migrations and integrations that the throttling eases during evening and weekend hours.

What do you think would happen to some 500Gbps+ connections of a certain Datacentre somewhere in West EU if about 100.000 users would use OneDrive at the same time? Would come down to 5Mbps per user, which is around 500Kb/sec up- or download...

And there are a lot more than 100.000 users in my local small! country...
