Onedrive's downloading speed is tremendously slow

Hi everyone,

I'm confused by the fact of Onedrive's downloading speed to be very slow. I'm trying to download my video file from Onedrive and the speed is 1 MB/s only, having internet channel speed 100 mbps. Download speed from competitor's servers (Mega.nz, FREE Plan) is 10 MB/s, which utilizes my whole channel. The funny thing is that the upload speed was 10 MB/s to Onedrive's servers, but the download speed is only 1 MB/s.

I've removed any limits on download speed in Onedrive app, updated the app, changed TCP congestion protocol to BBR, but the result is the same.

I'm quite aware of other complaints on Onedrive's download speed, but still hope for a resolution. I've sent my question to Onedrive's tech team, but here I'm posting to:

  1. Get more ideas on how to solve this issue
  2. Attract more attention to the problem

I have the same problem, my internet speed is 400 Mb/s but of course MS allows 1Mb/s downloading speed from OneDrive. It looks like they don't know how to downloading files in the 21 century should look. For example when downloading from GoogleDrive i usually get around 40-50MB/s which is perfectly fine. I am thinking about switching to Google :)

    Hi David, this is Bryll

Thank you for writing us here in Microsoft Community.

Please consider in checking on this link for limitations of OneDrive related to downloading of files: Download files and folders from OneDrive

To identify the source of the issue, a few questions we need to ask:

    1. Is the problem the same when connecting to a different internet network like a mobile data internet?
    2. Do you experience the same 1 MB/s download speed on other platforms or websites, or is it only on OneDrive?
    3. Are you facing issues with download all files or just specific ones?
    4. What is the size and file type you are trying to download?
    5. How do you download files in OneDrive, is it via OneDrive.com on the web or OneDrive desktop client?
    6. What is the username domain of your OneDrive account? Is it @Gmail @Outlook or work/school domain of the company?
    7. Are you using a personal OneDrive or a work/school SharePoint?

There are several potential reasons why your upload speed might be faster than your download speed:

    1. Asynchronous connection:
    • Most internet plans are asymmetrical, meaning they offer a higher download speed and lower upload speed. This is because typical internet usage involves more downloading then uploading.
    1. Network congestion:
    • During peak hours, your neighborhood or ISP network might be congested, causing the download speeds to slow down while upload speeds remain unaffected. This is similar to a traffic jam on highway, where it is easier to send data out than receive it.
    1. Bandwidth throttling:
    • Some ISP's might throttle download speeds during specific activities. This can also lead to a disparity between upload and download speeds.
    1. Background applications:
    • Certain applications running in the background might be using up more download bandwidth than you realize, leading to slower download speeds.

While we wait for your answers to our questions, try these strategies in a sequential manner:

    1. Try using a different internet environment or connection. If your mobile phone's internet data is strong and stable, try to check its download speed for OneDrive and other platforms or website.
    2. Make sure your antivirus software, VPN or firewall is not blocking or slowing down OneDrive.
    3. Try using a different browser or an incognito window to access OneDrive and download the folder. You can also download the folder in smaller batches instead of as a single zip file.
    4. Check your OneDrive settings and make sure the download rate is not limited. You can find this option in the Network tab of the OneDrive settings.

Should problem remain, we will recommend other strategies once we receive your response to our questions. If possible, please share some screenshots or video of the problem.

    Yours truly,

    Bryll

I can't believe the gall of this company. The only responses are just gaslighting BS. I am so glad that I didn't buy into Microsoft stock. Nobody that works on a computer would continue to use OneDrive, especially if they value their time. Especially since every other cloud service works flawlessly. I don't even notice when Google Drive syncs 30gbs, but one file takes ten minutes to open with One Drive.

FIX YOUR PROGRAM. Provide additionally bandwidth.

This scares me. Now, I fear a future where MacOS is my only choice due to stupid management issues like this ruining your company. I would like to take pride in my choice of OS, like "Mac people" do. Microsoft users are do not love Microsoft they are not "Microsoft People". Microsoft should want PC people to refer to the "Microsoft Master Race" yet they have pride in the PC DESPITE you. Wake up. Ubuntu will replace you once one day once they perfect compatibility issues in their free time.

I have the same problem, my download speed from google drive is between 80 to 100mbps but one drive is downloading at 60klbps or less. For example, i've tried to download a single 1.58GB file from work for the past 3 days without success. What might be the issue? and its not internet connection, nor drive space, i double checked both. I downloaded a file from other cloud storage providers with no issue but I'm yet to complete one download from OneDrive

I have exactly the same problem. Download speeds of barely 100kbs which my bandwidth is at 150MBs down. Everything else works super fast on my connection but OneDrive I can barely download a file or work.

Have tried all the advice and gone through all the settings and nothing works to speed it up
