The left and right margins/indents are correctly displayed. I expect that the text should get aligned to these. But, it is shifted towards right.
The file uses "mirror margin." The text on alternate pages are aligned correctly.
Actually, the horizontal ruler is fixed at its place. It should move left and right on alternate pages. This is not happening. Which setting is incorrect?

The display issue with the ruler has been reported to Microsoft (see previous replies in this thread). Microsoft has confirmed that they are investigating the issue but no further information has been provided yet.
Despite me finding that returning system to an earlier time solved the problem, I now know that is only temporary. If you dodge updates and shut down without updating, all is well, but when the system won't allow shut down unless you activate update, then the problem returns after the update. Is it possible to cancel word based updates, or updates altogether for that matter?
