When I try to unsync any folder, this error message appears:
"The folder you tried to unselect contains the windows documents folder, which is an important folder in windows and is currently pointed to Onedrive"
This is a new thing that started happening over the weekend, as I use OneDrive on a daily basis.
Rebuilding all the folders and subdirectories are not an option since they are time-consuming and there is not enough space on my local drive (which is why I am using OneDrive and turning folders on and off).
Microsoft, please sort this out.

My actual problem was that I wanted to not sync the desktop folder.

You do not understand the problem Craig. Windows is identifying Onedrive as the Documents folder and in my case it renamed Onedrive Documents. I renamed the folder back to Onedrive and to no avail it is still identified as Documents when I try to uncheck a folder from being synced. I unlinked Onedrive and reset it up but still when I uncheck a folder an error occurs that the sync cannot be unchecked because the folder is in the Windows Document folder. Which it is not. It is in the Onedrive folder. It has been this way since 3/1/2024 when I was forced to do a reinstall after a Windows Update broke Windows 11. An update caused a nest of Blue Screens. By the way System Restore is broken. I read that Microsoft fired the Quality Control Department and is now making the customer quality control. If I am right I am lodging a complaint. I do not have time to be constantly fixing Windows!!!
You can't uncheck the Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders at Choose folders. When you try to uncheck it you get a notification that seems incorrect to me also.

That is precisely my complaint as well. Microsoft can't be bothered to hire decent engineers and product managers and now they're asking customers to do their jobs for free on our own time.
Microsoft - you need to show us an employment contract and paycheque as a software engineer/product manager first before asking us to fix your deficiencies.
This is still happening; it is still (incorrectly) saying that every sub-folder is THE documents folder are can't be unchecked (same with Pictures subfolders, etc).
