I'm seeing the same thing in my OneDrive. I cannot uncheck any folders either. I'll try to report the problem to Microsoft.

In the meantime you can use the Files On-Demand to free up local storage space.

None of the device folders are syncing and they never have been.

I usually sync and unsync projects as their status changes so that there is room on my device for the active project.

It is only since this week that I started receiving this error message that prevents me from unsyncing inactive projects, so now there is no room on my device for active projects.

Something at Microsoft changed over the weekend and other users are also similarly affected since then.

I see. So you are using the Choose folders window to remove files from your computer so that they become online-only files.

Rebuilding all the folders and subdirectories are not an option since they are time-consuming and there is not enough space on my local drive (which is why I am using OneDrive and turning folders on and off).

Microsoft, please sort this out.

Are you talking about the Choose folders window where you check or uncheck the folders you want to sync to your computer?

The Manage backup window is where you choose the folders that you want to sync to OneDrive.

They both use the word sync in their descriptions but they have different functions.
