Selecting a cell in Excel goes to an incorrect cell

Issue reported multiple times for several years:

When selecting a cell in Excel, the cell selected is in a different location to where the user's cursor is. Issue leads to massive amount of lost productivity and causes serious errors in data.

Reported multiple times recently, no response from MS other than to report it to Feedback Hub (again).

The bug renders Excel totally unfit for purpose, for customers paying for it.

The bug should be fixed immediately, treated as high priority.

Steps already tried:

  • Regress Office version.
  • Rebuild laptop altogether.
  • Change laptop altogether.
  • Try Safe Mode.
  • Reset scaling to 100% on all monitors in use, and reboot.
  • General driver updates.
  • Try touchpad instead of mouse, change mouse.

    Hello Tom,

The offset selection problem is a relatively rare complaint. Unfortunately, we've been unable to reproduce the issue in house. I'm sorry that you're hitting it so frequently.

We suspect that it may be caused by freeze panes, grouped columns and rows, or filtering (or some combination) in which the mouse click gets out of sync with the cell table when doing a lot of manipulation to the sheet.

If you could provide an example workbook and a step by step description on how Excel gets into this state in your next feedback submission, it'd be hugely helpful. You can mention my name. Otherwise, it's near impossible to track down the cause of this anomaly.

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Hi Tom,

Sorry to jump on this query, did you get it resolved?

I am having the exact same issue and it is driving me slightly insane!!!! I use excel constantly and have done all the things suggested but nothing works.

    Thanks

    Suzanne

    Hi peiyezhu,

The issue is when selecting a cell via mouse click.

We've tried all the above, eventually we decided to change to a new laptop altogether, and the issue is the same, only somewhat worse (distance between cursor and cell is greater, and it takes more effort to revert the issue in order to continue working).

I'm not sure whether the rebuild on the original laptop would have made any difference, probably not as we tried more than one Office reinstall and more than one build.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    re:

How you select or active a cell?

using mouse left click or just keyboard move ?

I have no problem in selecting a cell or range.

Have you tried format disk c and reinstall whole windows system?

Most of weird behaviors may be solved by reinstall windows system.

    Tin,

I've already reported it via the Feedback Hub more than once, I've seen no response and been provided no update.

Please liaise with higher levels as applicable in order to provide a meaningful response and update. This remains a quite appalling situation.

    Thank you,

    Tom V
