A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
I can confirm that in Word ver. 2303 (Current Channel) after opening a read only document, Word enters Viewing mode but you can then allow editing:
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Since the reviewing, editing, and viewing feature I cannot copy and paste from a read only document. I have to gain access to even copy and paste. My job requires me to copy and paste from upwards of 10 documents. Since word won't let me copy and paste from a read-only or viewing document I have to check them out of our SVN every time. Does anyone know how to turn this feature off and go back to the original word?

We are also having this issue, the update seems to have completely broken the form fillable elements of Word when using a read only document. The only way around it appears to be making our users save the form to their PC. A thing we 100% totally and utterly don't want them to do.
0/10 for this update
It really seems Microsoft would rather have enterprise users purchase old licenses rather than subscribe to a service that breaks key functionality for a monthly fee.
Especially since this issue has been flagged by the community for several months now.
I've just updated 3 machines (1 had the option, the other 2 didn't) to Version 2212 Build 16.0.15928.20198 (interestingly the Build shows 20198 at the end in the Account details and in control panel, but if you click on the About Word or About Outlook button the Build shows as 20196).
The one that had the Editing, Previewing, Viewing option still has it after the update.
So, no change!
I agree. I'm confirming there are no security updates missing from rolling back. It's the latest version before the version causing this issue for everyone. Anyone who has access to MS Technician I hope they prepare an update fix this so we can run the latest version without issues. Usually most security updates are with Windows vs Office updates, usually.
Hello, Amy M.B.
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
The point is actually that you do not have the permission to edit this document directly, not how to turn off the reviewing, editing, and view feature. May I ask whether this file is shared with you by someone else? If so, you need to contact that person to remove the editing restrictions against you, otherwise no one else can remove the read-only restriction from that document.
If this document is encrypted with password by yourself, then you need to decrypt it. After decryption, you can edit it directly, and it doesn't matter if you turn off the reviewing, editing, and view feature or not.
Feel free to reply if you have other concerns.
