Another account from your organization is already signed in on this device. Try again with a different account.

I've been using Microsoft 365 (through work) for 8 years now on my personal Macbook with no issues until yesterday. Yesterday I tried to do some work in Excel and it wouldn't allow me to save it because I needed to sign in. I thought that was strange because I never logged out, but hey no big deal I'll just sign in. But when I try to sign in, I get this error message, "Another account from your organization is already signed in on this device. Try again with a different account." The reason I know this can't be true is I only have 1 Microsoft 365 account and this is my personal computer. So I need help being able to log in. I'm not able to save any documents in any of the apps.

UPDATED May 5th, 2023

There is a new solution way at the end of this thread..reprinted here that I have used 3 times this week, with 100% success!

"For Mac devices, follow these steps:

  1. Close all Microsoft 365 apps.
  2. Open Terminal, and then run the following command:
defaults write com.microsoft.Word ResetOneAuthCreds -bool YES

  3. Open the Microsoft Word app and continue with the activation steps." My older Post: I also have the same issue with this, on a Mac macOS 11.7.2

Started about 2 weeks ago...

There are 2 user accounts on this Mac and each has their own Office 365 License - and sign in as themselves within their own login account.

If I uninstall every single part of Office it goes away - for the first user who signs in..but once the second user logs on the issue returns.

Using the License Removal Tool - does nothing - I also found a script thats named MS Office ActivationTroubleshooter - it does nothing either.

I have (Today) installed the Mac OS 11.7.2 update - no change and the Office 16.68 updates - also no change.

My thought was to have each user sign out of Office when they log out of the computer and then sign back in when they log back in. These users work 3 days at a time... so they each have their own Account on the Mac. But this did not work either. Once the second user signed in it was locked up.

Here is an exact screen shot of the error.

I went into Keychain Access -> System Keychain -> System, then searched for Microsoft. Found around 40 items, selected all en deleted. Got a couple error messages I disregarded. When starting Excel again, I was able to activate license. I have tried all the other suggestions in this thread.

None of the solutions in this thread are working. I can access Teams and (new) Outlook but Word and PowerPoint are locked by this error message. EDIT: that was temporary — now I've lost access to all apps. Can't log into my organization at all. Advice against trashing those library folders as recommended a few comments above. Made my situation worse

I had this problem and it was across all Microsoft. I found that on powerpoint only, when I went to the Powerpoint tab, there appeared to be a line saying sign out which didn't appear on any of the other applications. I signed out and signed in again, it's all working now. Try going through all of your apps (perhaps Outlook) and sign out, it should give you the option to sign out of everything. Sign back in again and see if that works.

Hi there - I was having the same problem and none of the suggestions above worked for me, but I might have found another!

What I did was delete all the stored Microsoft-related certificates and passwords from my Keychain - for some reason it wouldn't allow me to delete those ones individually (I clicked "Delete" over and over and simply nothing happened), so the only way I was able to do this was by resetting my Keychain entirely.

NOTE: This will essentially log you out of every app on your computer and every website on your browser, so make sure that you have your app passwords written down and your website passwords saved by your browser and/or a password manager.

    So to do this:

    • Quit all Office 365 programs
    • Open up Spotlight and search for Keychain Access
    • Go to Preferences
    • Click "Reset default keychains". It'll ask you for your permission and your password.
    • Not sure if this step is 100% necessary, but just to be sure I emptied my trash and restarted my computer
    • Started MS Word, was able to log in with no trouble

Hopefully this works for someone else!

My license is through work (a university), and our tech support group has "fixed" the problem twice now by deleting all Office apps, clearing sundry ~/Library directories, rebooting, reinstalling, etc. Very inconvenient to say the least. The problem always reappears within a day or two. I use Office on two other Macs without any problem.

Makes me love MSFT less every time it happens, and I in no way love the company to begin with.
