Office documents appear with an orange/yellow box in front of them. They won't open

I recently upgraded to Windows 11 pro. I reviewing my locally stored documents, several of them have an altered ICON with what looks like a file storage box to the left of the standard application ICON. None of these files will open by double-clicking. I chatted with MS support this morning and the agent couldn't figure it out either. Fortunately, most of these documents are also on OneDrive, but I have >100 with this issue and it will take time to find and restore a working copy.

Has anyone seen this?

    Yes, I did try and I was able to access the document. It was some time ago so I’m not sure if this is exactly what I did, but the result was the same and I was able to get what I needed. Thank you so much!

    I just resolved same issue today with the same error you posted. My client migrated his data form an old computer and all the world docs and excel files were having same yellow box. I realized that my client is not signed in into OneDrive that is why all the files are locked and not accessible. As soon as I signed in the files started synching and the yellow box disappeared. Try it once

    I don't use Personal Vault, but this documentation from MS https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/video-how-to-use-personal-vault-10dbc72a-a3c4-4b8d-86bf-c7493f3866b0 .

    shows that when a file is placed in the Vault, it is only visible inside the vault folder when you open the vault. No need for a special icon. Do you think the icon is something new?
