Office 365 subscription

My computer died. Dead, finito, nada mas. I bought a new computer (16 MB RAM!). I thought I could just download office from the web, enter my subscription key and all would be good to go. Well, that ain't happenin'.

What I ended up with is a copy of office from the official Microsoft website which with each document or spreadsheet I open displays the bar across the top begging me to buy office 365, which I already own. It also errors a lot and will not work with my Dragon VR (which, with my disabled left hand making it impossible to type well, is a true bummer when writing my business letters in Word).

Is it true that you only have to buy office once in a lifetime? I got the first one from a friend who was a Microsoft affiliate as a birthday present so never had to worry about money at all. I currently have five tabs open with instructions on how to correct my situation. They all say I need to disable office on my old computer but that one is, as mentioned, a memory in the biosphere by now. So my question is…

How do I get office 365 on my new machine without having to purchase it for $99 a year?

Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1, OS build 19043.1466, Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0. Processor – Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz, 16.0 GB RAM.

Stevied, FIRST you you need to uninstall the free trial version of Office 365 on your new computer to get rid of the prompt to purchase Office 365. THEN on your new computer all you need to do is sign into your Office Account , which was created when you first setup your Office 365 and reinstall your Office 365 from there. Sigh in with the same Microsoft Account that you used to purchase office 365 from the Microsoft Store OR used with a Product Key purchased from a third party vendor. Sign into your Office Account here: https://account.microsoft.com/services

That highlighted button, "Office", does work but but it adds the extra step of having to select the software needed rather than just using the taskbar icon (which I got from the desktop icon installed when I downloaded Office from the Internet), still does not work with Dragon VR and every time I restart my machine I get this error…

    Steve:

The orange "Office" tile you highlighted in the start menu is for the relatively new "Office" <cr>applet MS started including in Windows 10 about a year ago. If "you" (obviously not you specifically, but other people reading this reply) don't have it you can get it free from the MS Store.

    .

It's funny, for the last 30 years I've been saying, in frustration, "there is no such thing as an "Office" app. Finally there is ...

Unfortunately, it's use is crippled because MS has not bothered to explain how it works, specifically the 3 modes it has for launching apps.

    .

So, the key point for you is, if you do launch the crapplet, make sure it shows that you are signed in. If not, click on the button to sign in to 365. Then it will work as expected.

    .

The orange "O" tile launches the (new) "Office" <cr>applet.

    .

    .

Unlike older versions of Office, 365 does not create an "Office Folder" in the start menu. Each application is listed separately. This is why the orange Office app tile in the start menu is so misleading.

    .

Search for the apps by name, ie Word, Excel etc. the start menu.

I do see you have the "small" size Office apps in the "Productivity" group on the Start Menu Pane, Between the "Office" app tile and the "Mail" tile. Clicking on any of those buttons will launch your desired app

You can also "Pin" the individual Office app tiles to the task bar if you prefer to work that way

Stevied, What you are seeing is Microsoft looking after Office 365 users and ignoring users of One-time payment versions of Office. You get that to that page using the link on this webpage: Uninstall Office from a PC (microsoft.com) Sign in to download Office

    1. Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in...

If you click on 'Services & Subscriptions at the top of the page you will get to your Office Account

Hi Karl, and thanks to everybody else who is replying. I gain a little bit more understanding with every reply.

Settings reveals an Office 2016 application. which was probably what I was using on my old computer (that old drive was added to this machine as the F: drive). What I have in Settings is the Microsoft Office Professional 2016, Microsoft 365 (the free trial version noted below?), that orange Office application and Excel (surprisingly no Word) along with the other stuff I do not use (Outlook, Publisher, and Access). I believe the Office 2016, given to me by a third-party affiliate as a birthday present, is a perpetual license. However, I have decided to upgrade to the $69 per year personal Microsoft 365.

Before I actually purchase it however, I downloaded the free trial available only for the 2 – 3+ people just to make sure everything is in order before I make the purchase. Well, it's not.

My Start menu shows two icons for Excel and two icons for Word. I got a shock when I opened the top icon for each of them and, believe it or not, a new Microsoft Edge window opened! The second icon opens a new window for Excel/Word with the upgrade advertisement. The first icon that opens Microsoft Edge does not have an uninstall option (see screenshot)…

I need your advice as to whether the following plan is the best way to go. What I'm thinking is to cancel the trial for Microsoft 365 then uninstall everything I can find on my computer having to do with Office in any way whatsoever. Then just go ahead and purchase the $69 personal Microsoft 365. I don't know what to do about the button without the uninstall in the Start menu above – – any advice?

    Will this cure my situation?

A question regarding what you see for Office 2016 - does it show <Office 2016 Professional> or <Office 2016 Professional Plus>? It may sound like a slight difference in the description but will make a big difference in what you need to do to completely clean up this system in order not to have any issues when you finally install Microsoft 365

Without knowing the answer to that question, what I would do if this were my system is start with uninstalling Office completely from this system using the Microsoft Uninstall Tool to get rid of all remnants of Office (you can safely ignore the info related to the <Microsoft Store>

*** if you had <Office '2016 Pro Plus> on this system, will have to give you some additional instructions but not worth confusing things now if that isn't the case

Sounds like a great plan. No need to cancel your trial if you purchase MS 365 before the 30 days are up and if you don't purchase it within the 30 trial period (actually within the first 27 days to avoid being charged for a '365 <Family> subscription) all you need to do is make sure to turn off <Recurring Billing> for the trial

Turn recurring billing on or off for Microsoft 365 for home

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/turn...

If everything has been removed from your computer, it should also take care of the icons in the <Start> menu. If not, let me know and we will take it from there otherwise complete the purchase for '365 Personal whenever you're ready from

Last word of advice, take it slow and come back and ask any questions if you're not sure about something along the way following the adage "measure twice - cut once"
