High CPU Usage on macOS Catalina.... This is very annoying!

Hey guys,

I've been feeling very frustrated about OneDrive:

Ever since I've switched to Catalina on my MBP 15", OneDrive keeps spinning up a bunch of processes called "OneDrive Finder Integration", about 5-6 of them and then Finder goes over 130% along with another system-level process. Needless to say, this kicks up the fans to the full speed and, if running on battery, chews up through so much of the battery. The only other way around this is to pause the app which defeats the whole point of having a "cloud" backup. I've looked around, run a bunch of scripts suggested, uninstalled, reset and then reinstalled the app with no success. Can someone help me with this?

BTW, why can't I check my Preferences (where the version number is accessible) when OneDrive is paused?!!! this is just poor planning as far as I'm concerned!

    Hi 5ilverorange,

    I understand your feeling and read all your reply carefully. As you can see in the article: Sync files with OneDrive on Mac OS X , Turn on Finder integration part. If you turn on the extension, you will see sync status from overlays on files and folders in Finder.  I have tested on my side; OneDrive will not stop syncing if you stop the extension.  As pre your screenshots from Activity Monitor, the OneDrive Finder Integration take high CPU usage but not OneDrive App, so please disable it temporally and check the result.

    Besides, from the activity Monitor, the Finder and distnoted take the most and second most usage of CPU. Does it stop running if you turn off the extension?

    I have a similar problem and this thread helped me find the culprit and at least partially solve it.  

    In my case the "Finder Extensions" were available on another sync product called SyncedToolAgent.

    If I turn on OneDrive Finder Extensions and SyncedToolAgent Finder Extensions things calmed down.

    The problem is I need the Finder Extensions.

    Similar issues here. Just moved 25 staff over from Dropbox Business to OneDrive/SharePoint. We are all on Macs. Same problem with a Word document name ending with a space not syncing. Staff complaining of syncing problems, sync status icons not displaying half the time. Lot of calls from staff every day requesting help. If not sorted/settled in coming days, will need to review with option to abort and revert to using Dropbox. Cant run a business with all these cloud issues ongoing. Will cost us AU$8,000 more, but productivity needs to be prioritised. Sounds like Microsoft are not looking after Mac users. Same old story of Entourage days

    Hi all,

    I can support all your experiences here. I have two OneDrives accounts (Work and Personal) both running milage.

    And would like to add that disabling the OneDrive Finder extensions has eliminated the High CPU usage in my case. The drawback is that you can no longer see the sync status next to each file. Here is a screenshot to confirm what I did to resolve it: 

    I did not need to make any other changes for this work, the CPU calmed down after 10min of making this change. And the files do update when a change is done as usual. Another screenshot to illustrate:

    Regarding Mark's and 5ilverOrange's conversion, the half-a-dozen OneDrive instances in the Activity Monitor have disappeared, but disnoted spikes momentarily on new file uploads.

    With the trailing spaces in filename, I had literally renamed all offending document when first moving to the service, which was a manual time sink.
