I have tried to open a word / excel document.

It says it is updating, please wait a moment.

After a few minutes I get a message saying:

WINWORD.EXE - Application Error - This application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.

I had the exact problem (for office 2019 pro) on Win 10.
Solved by going to SETTINGS-->APPS-->Office2019-->restore--->offline restore

Same issue as described above (2/24/21)

First time I tried this method it didn't work, even after restarting computer :(

Tried it again the exact same way a second time (restarted computer) and it worked! Not sure why it took multiple times, but this method did end up working for me.

    Did have same problem.

    Used your advice.

Then had to sign in with program key.

Nice way for Microsoft to appear to be doing you a favour then jamming it to you.

Luckily I still had program key.

    Thanks for your help.
