Updating office and getting an error message (Office for Windows)

I have tried to open a word / excel document.

It says it is updating, please wait a moment.

After a few minutes I get a message saying:

WINWORD.EXE - Application Error - This application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  I almost went into cardiac arrest when I couldn't access any of my MS apps.  This worked like a charm!

I stop stop the "update" before the message appears and do a hard reboot(Power-restart). It opens normally after that. I have no clue as to why this occurs, neither does Microsoft.
