Updating office and getting an error message (Office for Windows)

Thank you.  However, I am running (in Windows 7 pro) with Office 2016 installed by the outfit that "built" my computer. So I haven't got the CD, product key etc, to do an install.  I have been to that site which cannot help.  Since I posted, I have tried a system restore.  The office suite programs are back, but I have been unable to set the update control to OFF and stop the original problem that I visited this thread about.  The Office Suite programs keep trying to update leading to the same error.

With preinstalled versions, you have limited options, because the retailer or the PC manufacturer actually owns the license (at least, that is the way I understand the "ownership"). 

If there is an associated account with the Office installation and you have access to that account, things will be easier to manage, of course. You should also be able to revert to a specific version and build (see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2770432/how-to-revert-to-an-earlier-version-of-office-2013-or-office-2016-clic).

Try (re-)starting the installation process. Most installations can be installed or reinstalled via your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services.

The download hung up for more than an hour so I tried shutting down the Microsoft click-to-run process in Task manager.  Now my Office Suite is GONE.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4586878/kb4586878-cumulative-update-for-net-framework update fixed the issue for me. Seems to be a .NET issue.
