I have tried to open a word / excel document.

It says it is updating, please wait a moment.

After a few minutes I get a message saying:

WINWORD.EXE - Application Error - This application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.

I tried the fix offered my MS. Went to online repair, ran the program, and it wiped out my whole Office 365 installation. Had to download 365 again. Not really sure the problem is fixed.

I am afraid that you will not like how I resolved this problem.  I bought Office2019 and Windows10 (because 2019 won't run on Windows 7pro).  Then I had Office2016 uninstalled, Windows10 and Office2019 installed, about $250.

This was a great fix - quick and easy - now my office products are working again.  Took less than 5 minutes. Thank you.
