I have tried to open a word / excel document.

It says it is updating, please wait a moment.

After a few minutes I get a message saying:

WINWORD.EXE - Application Error - This application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application.

Microsoft Office 10 was preinstalled on my computer when I purchased it  a few years ago.  I pay a fee every year to use it.  As of a few days ago the program comes up with and error reading stating it can not be open.  What do I do now?

Try repairing your Office installation; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b.
