How do I turn off the end of support banner in office 2010 permanently? (Office 2010, Windows)

Can a novice do this:  Yes

Can a novice make a mistake and render his computer inoperable:  Yes

Editing the Registry is not without risks and most articles strongly advise making a Registry backup just in case.  The problem with this is that if your computer will not boot up at all (and yes this can happen although not likely) it will be a real challenge to get to the saved backup.

Do you have a friend who is familiar with computers?  The best way to learn this is to have someone walk you through it.  Alternatively you can post questions here; you will get good advice but it make take time to walk you through it.  I would also second the comment about googling "Editing the Registry in Windows 10" and trying to get a feel for what is involved.  You will have to open RegEdit and then search for "TargetedMessagingService" [no spaces] and then follow the steps outlined in this thread to edit the Header/TimeToNextcall [no spaces] to the year 2025 or some other date.  That date is when the banner will appear again.

Everyone has to start somewhere. And while worst case problems in the registry can be catastrophic, ie Windows won't run at all, in this case that is unlikely in the extreme.

The actual mechanics of doing registry changes is trivially easy, as long as you get them right:

• change value of existing key
• delete key
• add key

That basically sums it up.

It wouldn't hurt to do some googling to find instructions/guidance on editing the registry.  User changes to the registry are known colloquially as "registry hacks" (search for that too).  Some of the hacks should tell you how to 'export' part or all of the registry.  Starting by exporting the "Office" specific registry key would give you a fall back position to undo any mistakes. You just import the export to undo your mistakes.

HKCU is programmers abbreviation for HKey_Current_User

• H=Hive (a collection of registry entries)
• K= Key
• CU = Current User

That is the registry key currently being used. That is where the OS looks to find registry settings. If you use the OS to make changes, this is where the changes are written

The .Default user is the template MS uses to create new user keys.  The rest of the keys under HKey_Users are generated by Windows as new userids are created.  They are typically MS cryptic

When you sign in to Windows with a specific Windows userid, that tells Windows which specific sub key under HKey_Users to copy from into HKCU.

At the end of the Windows session, part of the shut down process copies the values under HKCU to the specific

HKey_Users subkey.

One of the sub keys under HK_Users is for the admin account (I think it is S-1-5-18 on all machines).

How do I get to "Computer" on a Win10 computer? I only have This PC and from there, I can't seem to navigate or even find in search anything with the words "HKEY". I have installed the student version of MS Office on my computer. Thanks!
